What is the highest multiple of Price Guide you've paid for a coin?

Bankerbob56Bankerbob56 Posts: 1,397 ✭✭✭
We all realize that all price guides are just that "guides." BUT when a nice coin comes along alot of times those guides go out the window. So, what is the highest multiple over price guide you've paid for a coin? I am currently looking at coin that is priced at 2X guide. It has fantastic eye appeal, but it is a fairly common coin, in an uncommon grade.

About 20X-30X (but the coins--Morgan dollars--had wild bag toning). For lightly toned coins that were very well struck and nearly mark-free, about 3X (Barber halves). Paying 2X for an uncommonly nice-looking coin (for the grade) may not be unreasonable.

<< <i>I paid 4x for a gorgeously toned capped bust half dime in ms. Then i learned that I was a complete idiot, tried to sell it, zero takers, tried to dump it, zero takers, thankfully sold it back to the one person who wanted it, the dealer that I bought it from for a 10% loss, it still has it in his inventory to this day, oh I sold it to him over 2 years ago. Moral of the story don't ever pay multiples for a gorgeously toned coin, unless you are a whale that is..............I am in the middle, somewhere between a flounder and a sharkimage.............at least I have been schooled!image >>

Between a flounder and a shark, you say? Adult flounders have both eyes on one side of their heads. Sharks have no rib cages and their spinal columns are made of cartilage and connective tissue. You must be an interesting-looking collector!image

For a non-variety...about 2x I think. Varieties where there are no real price guides are an entirely different matter.

I paid about "triple Trends" for this coin in 2000. It was one of only three Dahlonega gold pieces recovered from the S.S. Central America that were graded by PCGS, with the gold foil certification label. Two additional Dahlonega gold pieces were recovered from the wreck and were auctioned as uncertified pieces. I knew that if I wanted a Dahlonega from the Central America, it was "now or never."

I have more than once paid multiples of guide for matte proof Lincolns. Thoses with eye appeal regularly do. I think the highest multiple was 4x.

The highest multiple that I recall paying was 1.78. It was for a Christopher Bechtler gold dollar (30.g star) in a very old PCGS EF-40 with a gold CAC sticker. I paid that much because I wanted a nice example of a Bechtler gold dollar that was minted before the U.S. gold dollars were issued starting in 1849.

Peacemonkey, you got a great coin for a bargain price!

For me, the most was 10x CDN bid for a coin. I didn't check Price Guide at that time, but I would guess this translates to about 7x to 8x Price Guide.
And, the coin sold to a collector who appreciated it.

I think I paid $350 for a toned PR66BN 1961 cent that lists for $13 in the guide.

Back in 2008 I was commonly paying 2x - 3x guide for nicely toned Matte Proof Lincolns. Maybe 4x.
  • Cougar1978Cougar1978 Posts: 8,269 ✭✭✭✭✭
No, I seldom pay over price guide price unless its something I just have to have and even then just a modest premium - 25-50%. I have more fatih in the PCGS Price guide than the overblown marketing hype of some big ticket coin seller pushing a coin at multiples of Market Retail simply because a coin has a sticker or green bean (especially if I think the coin is only average quality anyway).

On the flip side if someone pays multiples the price guide price, then its their money, their choice, their hobby. Certainly I can see where bidding can become heated over PQ better date issues.

I have paid multiples on inexpensive toned coins which I have retailed in the esoteric toner market.
