Gold coin dealers - who are the biggies?

PrethenPrethen Posts: 3,452 ✭✭✭
Oddly enough, I should be able to answer this myself since I was at the Denver ANA Show, but I only thought of noting who they were after the show closed.

I don't really consider APMEX in the mix because there is no real dealer you can talk to about the coins...at least whenever I called. If you want to order from their inventory, you get what you get.

However, at the show I know of John Gulde and Dallas Gold and Silver. I bought from both of them. Actually, John had much more in the collectible gold realm and I really liked that about him.

There were at least a few others at the show that had cases of gold coins stacked like cord wood. I recall one dealer (I wish I remember which one) that had Eagle stacks of 1926's and 1932's in MS64-66! He also had stacks of MS62's in a bunch of dates. He probably had several hundred of various dates and grades. And, those were just the Eagles. Anyone recall who this dealer might be?

    Doug Winter

One of the most informative sites out there.

Edit: Doug deals in the early date gold so he wasn't the one with the stacks of 20th century gold.

Doug is definitely a great gold dealer and has an eye for original, nice looking gold coins. But he does not appear to move a great deal of the generic stuff nor have piles and piles of slabs as I saw in those cases at the show.

I know Heritage is a big dealer in gold, but as far as I know, only to other dealers and they are like APMEX...they don't want to be bothered with looking for a particular coin or at their generic stuff.

Prethen, I think the dealer you are referring to at the Denver ANA was U.S. Coin out of Houston. They had about six cases with stacks of gold. They were in the middle of the bourse near the front.

Yes, this sounds about right. That would likely be one of them. Thanks for dropping that name. I know there were at least one or two others very similar to them on the bourse, though.

    What kind of gold coins?

Basically everything, but a wide variety of generics, with and without CAC is sort of what I was noticing and would like to be able to talk with the dealer at a future date when I'm ready to acquire more.

Another dealer who has real nice C and D mint coins and who may or may not be as well known as Mr. Winter is John Hamrick. I picked up a beautiful 1845-D $5 PCGS XF45 with a green bean from John a few weeks ago and was very happy with my purchase. Lots of nice non gold coins on his site as well.

Doug Winter specializes in specialty and better date gold. He is not big on generic gold. Park Avenue Numismatics and Lee Minshull are also good bets for better date gold.

Heritage, Spectrum, U.S. Coins, Phoenix, RARCOA and Lonestar are all big generic gold dealers.

Doug has some nice stuff no doubt but he selection is more specialized and limited, the best overall IMO in term of quality and selection while still having collector grade stuff is
