Fe! Fi! Foe! Fum! ... Oh Master of All Things Bean...Please Enlighten Me...

Which is the proper pathway to the Goose that lays the Golden Beans?

Would not buying up Morgans in MS62, MS63 rattlers be a productive path?

Or better still, how about Proof Franklins in rattlers? My understanding is that early on, the TPGs were a bit reluctant to use the higher proof grades.

Your ideas? experiences?

My first gold bean was on an 1848-D/D Half Eagle in PCGS AU53 (not an old holder).

    YMMV, of course.

If you want to be sure...only buy coins that already have the gold bean.

I think the OP is interested in getting in on the crazy premiums attached to the gold beanies right now.

Blindly buying rattlers is a recipe for disaster!!!

Despite what many sellers would have you believe, the vast majority of rattlers that had premium quality coins have been cracked out and resubmitted. In my observation, most all rattlers contain coins that are either properly graded or even overgraded. DO NOT fall for the rattler hoopla. Learn to grade your particular series properly, look at a zillion coins, and you'll find the piece(s) you want.

I would suggest common coins graded in large quantity with a small price spread between grades that are in holders with non-super gem grades. Examples would be late date Mercs in MS64-65, proof Franklins in PR65, 1938-D Buffalo nickels in MS65-66, etc...

My understanding of a Gold Bean is that it is undergraded by at least one level. Does a coin with a Gold Bean have a higher premium than one with the higher grade?

  • Perhaps, you could look at all coins in PCGS/NGC holders for sale, and seek out a specimen which you feel is undergraded, or very attractively toned, or in an older holder (I know that just because a coin is in an older holder that doesn't mean it is undergraded), but use that reputation of the older holders to your advantage-and send it in. A question for the collectors here. I think the older/small ANACS green slabs and older ANA slabs were graded very reasonably, and in some cases, conservatively. I know the yellow label and blue label easily cracked ANACS slabs are not looked upon too favorably-but why doesn't CAC grade older ANA/ANACS, or even all ANACS holdered coins?

My first was on an AU58 $5 Liberty... a coin I thought had practically no chance of gold stickering.

There is no easy path, other than knowing how to grade and looking at many, many coins. You have to have the "eye" so to speak. That is how the crack out artists make a living, finding undervalued coins and getting them holdered in the next grade up. It is not something everyone can do and certainly not a simple task.

The path to enlightenment is to find a stash of rattlers, that you know for a fact, have not seen the light of day since they were slabbed. Now -- how you achieve that path is the true mystery of life. Reality shows would have you believe that every storage facility has at least one unclaimed bin that has them...go for it.

It does to people who collect the bean or the older holders like the doilies.

Hmmm....I recently sent in 25 coins.
    Of those, 3 went gold.
    1861 PCGS AU50 SLH (OGH)
1887 PCGS MS63 Seated Dime (graded raw about 5 years ago....toned)
1940-D PCGS MS63FB Dime (blast white, older holder with concentric plastic circles around the coin)

JA mentioned to me that ~ 1:350 get the gold, so he told me I did well with the coins I sent in.

So, how to get them? I would say to look for quality coins that may have been graded harshly. The 3 above all look nicer than their grade and, in this case, it is more than just "ownership adding a point " image
Old holders can help, but the 1887 wasn't in an "old holder", I just felt/knew it was undergraded by at least 1 point. I bought it as a MS64 and felt fine doing so, when it was raw. It graded (only was sent in 1 time) MS63 and I felt kicked in the head.

Later, our collecting desires changed a bit, so it became one I didn't want anymore, so I sent it to stickerville and it popped. Again, not an old holder.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

The proper pathway is to learn how to grade, then find undergraded coins.

Much like some other folks, I do not see the purpose of these stickers, either. Some folks just need to learn how to grade and judge a coin on its own merits. If you cannot do that, then you need to step back and learn.

Yes, like a common date Franklin in PF64 that you purchased for $475. This is the way to longterm financial gains.

Lots of folks said the same thing about TPGs in the mid-1980s.
