How many of you have been influenced...

LeeBoneLeeBone Posts: 4,467 ✭✭✭✭✭
...by other members here to start collecting something that you previously hadn`t?

I have.

One example...
I had never liked toned (or tarnished per rickoimage) coins and would only add white(originalimage) coins to my holdings.
Over time and seeing many pics of different denom coins from various members, I started to add a few.
I am very picky as to what appeals to me on this matter and do not find a whole lot of them that I will consider buying.
I have posted this before, but will use it again as one that I liked and wanted.

I`m thinking(actually I know), if I had not been a member here this coin would never haved landed in my collection.
So, a big "Thank You" to those who have opened my eyes, even just for a few coins if nothing else, to a whole different world.

Mike Hayes (MFH) got me started on Barbers. I have been hooked ever since. I bought my first higher grade Barber from him. He has always been very helpful answering my questions about the series. He lead me to this site which had quite the population of experienced collectors that I have learned a lot from.

No one here but some of the ancient collectors on Cointalk. Never knew I could collect them, took leaving the comfort of the U.S. forum, traveling to the darkside forum and viewing posts.

But I seeing other collectors coins, sometimes I see a U.S. coin so nicely toned I wish I could grab one just like it but it isnt that easy image

This forum has made me more favorable towards PCGS encapsulated coins. This forum has been a great source of information about new products from the mint as to what might be profitable to buy and flip.

As far as collecting, mostly upping the dollar amount that I might consider when buying coins. I am still a small guppy in terms of this forum, but 2x or even 5x as big a guppy.

They have no real big influence on me but can be a source of good data. Many of them I would not touch what they collect for the moon. I have been buying and selling coins for over 20 years and know how to run my business. There are a couple of them where I went to their ebay store or website bc they carry similar material and compared what they are getting for what they sell (ebay nicely provides this) and how their pricing compares to CW or the CDN. One guy in particular (bc what he has is very similar to mine) I have analyzed his pricing in great detail and can tell you where he is vs CW or Bid. This has led me to certain types of coins I can buy knowing I can get a certain price say on the Bay for them and make good money.

I don't know that I've been influenced to start collecting something new/different, but I've been influenced as to what the looks of coins I want are.

Definitely changed how I look at new potential purchases.

The influences of so many of you continues to reshape my thinking in ways that I thought weren't possible. That shows my ignorance. image ... and your patience image

Thanks for putting up with me this long.

While I can very much appreciate many other series I see posted here on the forums none have really influenced me in what or how I collect. I like what I like. image

    Nice Morgans by the way.

Dr. Dave got me serious about finishing an IHC set with this 1909-S. I recently added an 1877. A few more and I will have a complete set of cents, 1793 to 2009.

Then he showed me some CBH's. I hate Dr. Dave.

I have been inspired by TDN on how he gives back to the hobby and the series by the web site he provides. I have been mentored by Keoj on how to aproch and focus of my chosen series. I have had my eye sharpened and curisiosity sparked by the LSCC and all they provide. I have been kept on my toes by all the friends ( DDR, KAZ, tenndave and more) I have made along the way who share a bite/ drink and love for the hobby. My newest buddy ( dan) has made me want to be a better student by the way each coin poses a question and he tries to tackle them. This board really takes is a very important part of the hobby for me and I try to use it as it is intended and I make a point to be a value add and a voice of discent and reason when calls for

I have chosen the types of coins I collect (mostly seated, Barber, and circulated early commemorative halves) on my own without anybody's influence, but once I've mentioned these coins on the boards, I've gotten to know other collectors of these series and they have shaped the purchases I've made over the past few years.

TomB, Andy, Carl, Bruce, The Wise Bear, Perry, RoadRunner, Russ, and many, many more have taught me a great deal - just by reading their posts. Andy gets more "miles per word" than anyone.

    Best wishes and thanks,

I have profited immensely in the knowledge field here on the forum. The forum is responsible for the endless hours I have devoted to researching tarnish, AT methods, cleaning and how to judge the appearance of various methods used in coin alteration. I have not pursued collecting any specific series because of the forum, but have acquired some examples of various coins that I saw here. Cheers, RickO

I have to say that the one thing I learned here is an appreciation for original skin, be that white or toned.

i have purchased coins while under the influence, but not under the influence of another person
