Engraved coins by parents or granparents...

I know, this is a weird topic. My father ,way back then, when I was born (1957) thought to do the unthinkable! Yes, he engraved our birth dates and names in the coins. of course, it couldn't been a penny or a quarter, but my father engraved, three coin for myself and my two other brothers. Can you guess what denomination it was? You won't believe it! MORGANS! Mine was a 1921. Luckily, my brother's weren't much more rarer. I love my father for having his heart in the right direction, but Morgans? He did not realize the value,(as I shouldn't either) but did it because of the older dates. Pretty cool, when I think of it. No matter how high silver climbs, don't worry, I will not give it up,for all the "Gold in California"! Thanks Pa! Has anybody had the same happen to them? Oh, my other brother's feel the same as I do.

Did he do engraving as a hobby or was he in the jewelry or watch business? A pic would be nice.

Depending on the engraving, many Morgan dollar love tokens are worth far more than their uninscribed brethren. So don't assume the "collectible value" was destroyed. Of course, the sentimental value trumps all in the end.

They were worth a dollar in 1957, and today they are worth $22.25. Unless it was an MS65 or better, your dad did just fine.

I agree. I think an engraved Morgan dollar in 1957 was a cool birth gift!

I was lucky to find a love token with the initials of me, my wife and my first born. Now that a second baby is coming I think it will be tougher...to find 4 letters on a seated dime!

I agree. A nice keepsake but common Morgans are cheap. No loss to the hobby.

Alright, nice. I guess I'm not the only one.Thank you,for showing your coin! Soon, I'll show you guy's my treasure. The way your grandparents engraved yours, is far more neater and cooler than mine. Anyway, it's the thought that counts, right? - joey
