Got this at 4oz silver spot price. Seen some pics of this type thing before but don't know where. Can you educate me up on this a bit. I can get more if its worth it or it sells. Thought about posting in coins, but I bought for bullion.

You did good at spot.
If it looks like I can move them a decade from now at spot, I'll buy the other 5 of them tomorrow.
Just not that familar with them so just got the one, and will look around ebay tonight.
They are good for space saving too in the safe deposit box or other hiding spots.

I'm going to sneak out of work at lunch as early as I can and go back to get the others.
It cleaned up very shinny and new all around with a little wiping of my coin dip cleaner.
Is there an "official name" for this thing?

<< <i>It says .999 fine. Is that the same as 999 fine or is it really a little less than 001 fine which means it's silver plated? >>
Thanks, I wonder. Good point.
-I just looked at apmex silver bars which have ".999 -> Fine Silver" stamped on them.
I did notice two things, in that some places on ebay, I noticed the work Franklin. But those sales still went for about $140+,
so that seemed consistent with silver pricing. But anything with Frankin, spooked me.
The ends were quite tarnished and raw. But with a dab of the coin-dip, it instantly cleared and I got that wiff of sulfur, which gave me
a good vibe.

A bar that's been silver plated will act like a solid silver bar as far as tarnish goes. If APMEX is selling bars like this one you can be sure that it's legitimate. You, your local coin dealer, or a jeweler, can cut a small notch in the edge with a small file or stone to break through any plating and test it with acid.

so I have the set of 2, 5, 20, 50, 100, 1000, 5000, 10000

Looks like a neat set. Are you thinking about taking up paper money collecting?

The "New York Mint" has been making these 'Currency Proofs' for some time now. The designs change from time to time, and they sell them in both .999 silver and gold-plated versions.
Here's a pic of their latest 1 oz., from here.
They ask $99 + S&H for these new. On the secondary market they go for whatever you can get for them (i.e. generally bullion value or thereabouts).
I thought I jumped too soon (and I did) on a quick sale w/o the prior knowledge, and got stung w plated! Yikes.
I'm very happy (relieved) w melt in the future as that's what I paid. Just checking to see if I didn't got stung.
Looking at ebay, then newyork and gov mint sites (alone enough to make me poop my pants), I see 1oz and 4oz and even 8oz versions, all the same size. They sell dbl, or more, over spot new of course (cough -ripoff), which makes me feel better in that they are real silver and not plated.
At first I could only find 1oz versions, which had me shaken. Now I see the 4oz versions which is what I have. Magnet test, weight test, dip test. I'll bring them to a local shop today for a final, nick and acid test.
As long as they are real 4oz melt, and its investment silver only, I'm tickled pink, and can just enjoy them. Good lesson for me.
PS:
Used coin dip-clean and they shinned up nearly as nice as the one 'Staircoins' posted.
Also assume New York Mint and GovMint must be one in the same due to an almost exact duplicate web interface and products.
I see .999 fine silver on the bar.
<< <i>No need to cut - test the bar. A lot of bars say .999, it means the same thing as 999. >>
Thanks and this makes sense even though it doesn't make sense in a mathematical way.

I've been searching for one of these 2001 (or other year if they made them then) $5 Indian silver bills as I love the bar and would like to get one at / near spot. Saw one as a prize at another metal detecting hunt I was participating in, but unfortunately, luck wasn't with me on it that day.
If anyone has one at spot, let me know. I'm purchasing things for this years hunt again, and maybe my luck will be better on this one. Although if someone else were to win it, I'm pretty sure I'd have to try and buy it outright from them.
