Die State?????

Is there a good reference on learning to determine the die state for coins? Is it just intuitive? Picture the side of a letter as an "L" for early die state. a "{" for middle. a "(" for late die state???

There books on die states for half cents, and they are frequently mentioned in strudies for early die varieites. In these cases, dies states can be worth a big premium, especially those pieces with rare die states like an 1811 C-1 half cent with a two star break instead of the much more common four star break. As you move up in time, die states tend to be less important. As a matter of fact on a fairly recent coin, a late die state can be a negative.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
