What can I do..

..to keep my interest in the hobby, without any funds to help? I have virtually no disposable income at this point (just moved into a new house with the future wifey). I took a few months off from here due to the whole moving process and what not, and just recently started coming back more regularly. Quite honestly if it wasn't for this place I would be done with the hobby all together...but it just isn't satisfying the craving image Should I go back to roll searching bank boxes? At least it's at face value with some enjoyment, right? I've already inventoried my collection so that's out of the question. How about any coin related books that anyone would recommend that you just couldn't put down that are rather inexpensive?

I keep a few bricks of cents and nickels for those quiet times , if im low on expendable dough i sell a few coins ive least interest in and that gives me some to play with.In general i almost always have a few dozen coins ive bought only because i had the cash and i thought it an outstanding deal,i do this for these quiet times or extra spending cash at Christmas etc ..without question though roll searching has paid off many times over.

What type of stuff are you interested in? I have a few books laying around that I still have not got to.

I think searching rolls is a good way to stay in the hobby, most will tell you that a lot of the hobby is the research and learning about history.

You mentioned that you already took inventory of your collection, how about recycling some coins to generate income to put back into the collection (Sell some to be able to buy others).

My coin budget is non-existing... I buy when I see something that I like... which does not happen to often, I too enjoy the PCGS forums and they are deffinantly the root that keeps me in the hobby.

Good luck with the new house and the new wifey image

  • I'm mainly into Buffalo Nickels...very interesting series when it comes to grades and abraded die varieties and is also an expensive series. Selling off some of my collection wouldn't be a bad idea, but I think the thought of knowing I'm not going to get back what I put in is why I hesitate image

The old lady has brought home about 30 or 40 wheaties
in the past few weeks and that has satisfied my fix, even
found a 1933 lincoln in VF, I hear ya about dissposable
income, and I'm about to do what youve just done with
a new place and all, but I know I'll always be looking at
my change, and whatever strike my fancy at the BM, if I
can swing it, just hang in there and let things settle down

    * roll search for run and hopefully silver half dollars and some buffs in a nickel box.

    * sell the ones you know you will want to move up on them. then be ready to buy up later.

Any coin shows in your area? Even if you do not buy, they are interesting and informative. Cheers, RickO

Good used books don't cost too much. Look at it as an opportunity to read and learn, then later when the disposable income becomes available you'll be that much more educated and appreciate the coins more.

Start trading the coins you have extra or do not collect. It should make the hobby more exciting for you.

Perhaps you need to Strike It Rich With Pocket Change, a wonderful guide to modern error coins by Ken Potter and Brian Allen.

You might try collecting something very inexpensive. You might be surprised how much fun you'll have.

That looks like it would be an interesting buy.

As for coin shows none are really in my area...maybe a handful each year.

I guess taking out the collection and parting with some of it isn't too bad of an idea. Even if I decide not to it will peak my interest looking back at when and where I bought those coins.

Roll searching is not a bad idea. There's still plenty of good stuff out there that you can get for face.

Edited to add: I noticed you said you were into Buffalo nickels. They can still be found in boxes and yes, with full dates too.

If there is a local coin club, that might be a good place to try. Unlike a shop, or a show, if a person doesn't buy anything, it isn't a big deal, and doesn't feel like time wasted.

Almost all budgets have some juice to be squeezed out. Skip lunch one day a week (or have like a granola bar) and that might be coin money for the month. If a person has already done many things like that, unfortunately, that person probably bought too much house.

Yeah, I too was and currently in your situation. Not the wife part, but the weak on funds part. Buffaloes you said? How about purchasing, ( if your pocket book allows ) some dateless buffaloes. Very inexpensive, and quite fun, hours of fun too! You know what I'm going to say. Get the ole "nic-a-date". And search away! I found two of the coveted 1913S type 2,and about 4 14D's. also, I found 13D type 2 . Plenty of fun for the least of cash. You might even find a 1916 DD, or a 1918/7 . Rewarding, if one has the patience. Warning: be careful, not to drop too much acid on the coin. You'll really ruin it! Please let me know if and when you go this route. Good Luck.

Some really good ideas ahead of me. I think getting a box of halves and going through them for silver content would be a good bet. Ive done it 3 times this year and have almost $400 in silver content to show for it!

    Suggestions....

    1. Buy some whitman albums and try to fill them with change. Jeffersons are my favorite cause its common to find even the earlier dates.

    2. Trade with other forum members

    3. Roll search for silver halves, nickels or wheats or possilby even errors

    4. Cherrypick junk silver piles at coin dealers or those bullion stores that buy gold and silver for nice Au/Bu coins for melt

Thats what I do anyway when funds get tight.

Buy a cheap clad Washington Dansco album and go to your coin operated car wash, place in fives and tens and sort through the quarters, plugging in as many holes as possible.

Fun and cheap and gets you out of the house for awhile.
