Here's a coin I bought from Marmac about 6 years ago or so....I met him at a local show and we did a show and tell (he had more than I did as, at that time, most of my collection was moderns). I saw this coin and liked it. We struck a deal. Marmac has/had a really good eye for appealing coins (he specialized in half-cents, and I bought a few of those from him 2 years ago), but he also grabbed some very nice non-half cents.

Here is a half dollar that he had, that I bought. I sent this, with about 24 of her closest friends, to TomB. He imaged some for me and sent the group up north to stickerville. This was one of about 3 or 4 that came back as a golden girl. There were 5, I think it was, that are coming back in the same clothing that they left in. The rest are getting a little seasick and will be showing up a bit green I hear.

So, without further ado, the pic that TomB took of this lil golden girl.....feel free to guess the grade if you would like.
What may look like a scratch on the upper obverse is a scratch on the holder, not the coin.

If it got a gold sticker, it is probably graded AU50. I would say its real grade should be AU58.

    Thanks for the comments, guys.
BTW....I did neglect (accidentally) to mention that it is in a PCGS OGH label.

I'll guess the grade on the holder is AU50.

Congrats on the very pretty SLH, and also on the gold bean! Way cool.

Whatever the grade, it's a great looking piece. With this original toning, PCGS has been all over the board. I can actually see it in an xf-45 OGH, although I think a more appropriate grade is 53 or so and, if is is lustrous, 55. But I'll say it's in a 50 holder as well and that it belongs in a 53-55 holder.

Beautiful coin, and as with beautiful women many times, just a hint of imperfection (wear) accentuates the beauty of the coin IMO. I say 55...

Great coin- a work of art as it currently resides in a PCGS OGH.

As for offering a grade, I think it would cheapen the moment as for assignng a number for this one seems wrong.

    Okay... enough of the BS.

Even though it is in an OGH, I still see little if any actual wear-only breaks in color that may be perceived to be wear- and preceived to be heavier than it really is. The lustre is muted by the originality which in turn influenced the grade- and I would suggest PCGS graded the coin lower than I would. I suspect it is in a 50 or 55 holder. I would be more inclined to grade it a minimum 58 and reserve the right to up the grade to 61 after seeing it in hand. That's right- it could be MS as shocking as that may sound.

All I can say is I'm sooooo jealous. What a beauty! My WAG is AU 64 image I can't say for sure I see any rub at all. Possibly some break in the luster but I'm not so sure. I'll say MS-64 Such a beautiful coin, who cares about the grade! Thanks for sharing such a beauty....Joe

I guess 55. So it must be in 50 or 53 holder.

    PCGS OGH AU50.
    Now with a GOLDen tan.

I would agree with the cabinet (or similar) friction.

TomB - you saw it in person recently....you have said you liked it image, would you say the luster was there as well?
It is darker than I normally get, but I totally like the coin.

AU50 by current standards. Years back it would have been called XF40. Nice coin, regardless.

UNC from an old collection I suspect it has seen a dip in the distant past but retoned in a nice way.

It sure is beautiful. Thanks to whomever bumped up a 7 month old thread. I don't mind seeing this coin again. image

I'm going to retract that based on looking a lot closer and seeing encrustations of dirt in some of the details and edges of the lettering. That couldn't survive a cyanide dip. My reasoning first was based on the fact this coin appears without circulation marks but seems not to have a mint state luster. Also having went through the pollutant filled air of the industrial revolution the overall darkening seems insufficient. The old dirt though tells a different tale and opinion changed.
