My Recent Humbling

jp84jp84 Posts: 206 ✭✭✭
First post for me, but I have been reading the forum for a few months. I am a part-time dealer that does a local show about six times a year. I also collect - Canadian decimal and most US series. I thought I had a good eye so I bought a few raw Morgans / Peace dollars in the past few months and recently sent them to our host. Haven't got them back yet but I looked online and the news is not good.

1878 8TF - bought at $140 - slabbed at MS-63. Not bad, I was hoping for 64 though.
1880P - got 92'ed (think I paid around $60 for it)
1880CC - paid $450 slabbed at MS-63. Not bad
1880O - 92'ed (I thought it didnt look good but took the chance given the jump in bv for MS grades)
1883O - 94'ed...thought it was good
1893 - 92'ed....bought off someone that walked into the show I do for $300, I struggled to grade it through dark toning
1898 -slabbed at MS-62 though it would be 63
1926D - Au-55 thought it would get at least 60

I have four more Peace dollars in for grading that may save the day, we will see.

Anyway I will post pics when they arrive back and would appreciate any explanations on the grade that any of you may have. It would be nice to sit down with the graders and have them go through exactly why they graded the way they did.

Morgans are definetly not my series when if comes to grading. When ever I was looking for dates I had to have a copy of photegrade with me while buying, ive learned a bit now but still lack. I have always been to harsh with the grades for Morgans, to me the large surfaces are so disturbed looking even with the light bag marks.
  • Sounds like you didn't do too badly.
I could fill a book with all the coins in my "education" folder.
Some were expensive, some were just down right lame.
Cleaned coins, altered coins, overgraded coins, re-tooled coins, AT coins, removed mint marks, added mint marks, die polish, shoe polish... BIG list... when I got to the point of grading an MS61 as MS62 or 63, I was almost a senior.
You haven't missed it by too much.
    Keep up the fight!!

Unless you really, really, REALLY specialize in one particular coin, might be best if you only buy coins in slabs at the grade you want, or buy them raw with the intention of keeping them that way.

As others have said here, a good education can be expensive. It does not look like yours was too expensive though. We have seen much worse!

Take a grading course at the ANA Summer Seminar, you will get to sit down with graders and chat because they are many of the instructors.

This humbling beats the heck out of a lot of the recent grumbling I've been participating in around here (for fun, mind ya image ) . Welcome aboard.

yeah, just look at it this way: you now have some coins in your possession that you can study and learn from. next time you see a coin that looks like any of these you sent in that got BB'd, you'll recognize it. trust me, it gets easier. when in doubt, assume it won't grade. anyone that has been submitting coins for a while now has felt your pain.

I've been there too... Education can be expensive..
I actively collect, buy and sell US minted Philippine coins from 1903-1945. I am interested in anything during this period, Albums, Proof sets, collections, original rolls and bags, Cullion Leper colony coins etc.
Also a big fan of liberty seated coins.

Based on a recent rough submission of my own and others who have posted recently, I agree with you!

Suggest that you buy coins that are already slabbed. Buying raw coins is always a gamble unless you are a grading and authenticating expert.

Morgans have been my main interest for decades and I still get the grading wrong. Quit
trying to outguess the graders long ago. They are what they say they are!

I think they a harder on morgans, then other series. Not that I have proof, but when I look through the shared orders pages sometimes I see morgans being the most gennied coin. This could also be because so many a sent in. I don't know never submitted a morgan and don't really collect them as much ( I like seated and bust coinage).

Everybody needs to start somewhere but any person who wants to be a dealer, even part time, needs to know the basics of grading before they consider jumping in to the grading game. These results prove there is a lot of room for improvement.

    Welcome to the forum!

Sorry about the disappointing results. It happens to everyone at some point. Many of us have resubmitted coins we felt were unjustly condemned and gotten them back in problem-free holders. You might ask an experienced dealer-friend for advice.

    Looking forward to the images!
    Lance.

As 90% of my collection is raw morgans, and having just joined PCGS. I believe I will be having the same experience very soon.

BTW what variety is the 80cc?

    Do you have any pics?

OK, the 1880-O, I bought on eBay for $91 (that means that someone else thought it was worth $90!). Item number 150652328009 if you want to check out the pictures of it. It came out as 92'ed. Have a look and fire away at me, with the jump in book value from $55 in MS-60 to $360 in MS-63, I thought I had a winner.
