First post for me, but I have been reading the forum for a few months. I am a part-time dealer that does a local show about six times a year. I also collect - Canadian decimal and most US series. I thought I had a good eye so I bought a few raw Morgans / Peace dollars in the past few months and recently sent them to our host. Haven't got them back yet but I looked online and the news is not good.
1878 8TF - bought at $140 - slabbed at MS-63. Not bad, I was hoping for 64 though.
1880P - got 92'ed (think I paid around $60 for it)
1880CC - paid $450 slabbed at MS-63. Not bad
1880O - 92'ed (I thought it didnt look good but took the chance given the jump in bv for MS grades)
1883O - 94'ed...thought it was good
1893 - 92'ed....bought off someone that walked into the show I do for $300, I struggled to grade it through dark toning
1898 -slabbed at MS-62 though it would be 63
1926D - Au-55 thought it would get at least 60
I have four more Peace dollars in for grading that may save the day, we will see.
Anyway I will post pics when they arrive back and would appreciate any explanations on the grade that any of you may have. It would be nice to sit down with the graders and have them go through exactly why they graded the way they did.

I could fill a book with all the coins in my "education" folder.
Some were expensive, some were just down right lame.
Cleaned coins, altered coins, overgraded coins, re-tooled coins, AT coins, removed mint marks, added mint marks, die polish, shoe polish... BIG list... when I got to the point of grading an MS61 as MS62 or 63, I was almost a senior.
You haven't missed it by too much.
Keep up the fight!!

As others have said here, a good education can be expensive. It does not look like yours was too expensive though. We have seen much worse!

Take a grading course at the ANA Summer Seminar, you will get to sit down with graders and chat because they are many of the instructors.

Based on a recent rough submission of my own and others who have posted recently, I agree with you!

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......

Sorry about the disappointing results. It happens to everyone at some point. Many of us have resubmitted coins we felt were unjustly condemned and gotten them back in problem-free holders. You might ask an experienced dealer-friend for advice.
Looking forward to the images!

BTW what variety is the 80cc?
Do you have any pics?
<< <i>Everybody needs to start somewhere but any person who wants to be a dealer, even part time, needs to know the basics of grading before they consider jumping in to the grading game. These results prove there is a lot of room for improvement. >>
