I think we've all felt that way but it's very difficult to say anything definitive today. Best to sharpen your eyes and grading skills and judge the coins themselves.

Sellers will often use the "old slab" description to justify a higher asking price merely for the fact that the holder is an older issue. The truth is all generation holders will have some coins that are undergraded, some over graded and most correctly graded. Undergraded and over graded coins can appear in any given generation of holder.

Are you familiar with the old David Hall flips which morphed eventually into PCGS? I just bought one as I described in another thread, but was curious if you knew where I could determine market value other than Ebay.

You don't see those DH graded flips on a daily basis but they are salable because they have novelty interest and the grading standards are fairly consistent. In terms of value they don't trade like PCGS or NGC products do. The prices they realize are dependent on an individual per coin basis. Coins that would grade higher today can be sold for a strong premium while weak examples trade for a discount.

PCGS will not automatically honor the DH holdered grades nor automatically reholder them at the same grade.

  • Maybe a nice pictorial of all the generations of PCGS slabs, and some date ranges.
Could be PCGS has a "museum" or such of their history.

This could be the start of a new project for someone.

Bingo! That's why each coin needs to be evaluated on its own merrits no matter what generation slab it's housed in.

Wei hit the nail on the head. Whatever slab generation, a bell curve will exist. Cheers, RickO
