Auction raw coin grading programs

So far I have tried just Teletrade and Great Collections for their raw coin grading programs. My experience is that GC is much faster and more efficient, I'm not sure why. If you submit directly, obviously you have greater control and could get the coins regraded if unhappy with the result.

Anyone want to share their experience with these raw coin grading auction options?

Thanks.

Haven't tried GC yet for RAW, but if it is faster than TT, that is a huge plus, as it takes several months for TT.

I just tried GC for the 1st time for slabbed stuff and am VERY impressed. I have done many tens of thousands with TT over the last 25+ years but have had an increase in problems with them of late.

I really like what I am seeing with GC. I sent a box of slabs and a week later the auctions are already up and running and the pics are spot on.

The transparency (reserves, etc.) is refreshing. And the fact that GC has no buyback fee is HUGE. It can cost you $115 to buyback one expensive coin that does not sell at TT!

I also sent a box of slabs to TT on the same day. I have not even gotten a message from them yet that my consignment was rec'd!

As far as I am concerned, GC is a big wimnner!

I forgot to mention that there exists a pretty significant difference in the two raw grading/auction options:

With Teletrade your raw coins are not eligible for "plus" PCGS grades due to the wording of their contract.

Raw coins sent thru GreatCollections are eligible for +'s.
  • Thanks for those comments. This is the first time I have heard from other TT consignors. It looks like they are offering new incentives for consignors and expedited grading plans. You get what you pay for--if you pay rock bottom grading fees, you travel steerage. GC is responsive, customer-friendly, hungry for business. I have had unreserved coins go too cheap with them. That is the double-edged nature of no-reserve auctions, you must have the right auction and desirable material to get top dollar. In my experience upgrade coins do not do well at auction because imaging is imperfect. People bid based on the holder, description (GC does not describe), and overall aesthetic appeal.

    ??????
The grade is the grade if PCGS determines the grade to be MS-64+ that's what the coin gets.

If you are talking about Secure Plus there is an additional $10 fee per coin for that service.

    Believe what you want.

I have submitted thousands of raw coins to PCGS via TT and never received a plus grade.

Also, I asked TT how could this be? The law of averages says I would get some pluses, so why have I not.

They replied that their raw submissions are NOT plusable.
  • New option that I posted on there--express grading at PCGS, NGC, ANACS, and ICG for more money, I don't know if you will get plus, star, or other advantageous grading notations now.

Incidentally, the "free" grading option comes with all sorts of conditions, and when you are talking about saving $11 on $500 or more coins it gives you no advantage especially if you have to wait two months plus.

Maybe GC will replace eBay as a source to buy and sell coins

I really like this idea. :-)

PS. Of course, our sales are less than 2% of eBay's certified coin sales (my own estimate). We're growing though.
