Salutations and thanks. Anyone who serves knows what good service is.
  • I dont think it's a token , some may have seen me mention before about my being a member on the WW2 forum , that appears to be a servicemans replacement dogtag. This was commen practice to use a coin from where a man might be when its needed , his service number and full name points to it as well as the unit AED being mentioned.

Edited: No hole for a chain though and the obverse being as nice , maybe not what i thought.

    JamesMurray,

I had exactly the same feeling. Would this piece have been holded at the 12:00 position, I would have been inclined to call it a 'dogtag' or ID tag

    Might this be a dogtag?

  • Its one of those "if it could talk" items for sure , what a story it could tell. It got me thinking , during active service how many men actually wear the dogtags , i know i didnt , i got rid of them shortly after boot camp.Maybe this soldier needed a replacement but had no inclination to wear it as a pendent , stuck it in a pocket. A WW 1 soldiers pockepiece from the frontline, something a bit special about that.

There has also been one on "Long Island Numismatics" website that I would think is a WW1 replacement dogtag. Not my website, not my tags.

Probably a pocketpiece or secondary dog tag. The use of a Belgian coin is interesting. I didn't think many Americans were stationed in Belgium, a British area in WWI. Think Flanders Fields.
    All glory is fleeting.
