Will the Mint produce a hologram coin?

jmski52jmski52 Posts: 22,905 ✭✭✭✭✭
The Mint has expanded their repertoire over the years to include things like changing reverses, reverse proofs, satin finishes and bimetallic coins.

Do you think they will do a hologram coin before too long? Would you like a hologram issue?

I'm a fan of quite a few of D.Carr's creations, and I think this one turned out pretty nice:

I'm predicting that within 5 years, one of the upcoming anniversary issues of the ASE will contain a hologram. The grading services will then have to come up with a way to quantify the quality of the hologram and decide how it affects the grade. Collectors will then piss and moan about coins that are graded 70 that do not have as strong of a hologram as others, and flippers will complain about getting too many 69s as a result of not having sufficient guidance from the TPGs about how the hologram is taken into account when grading. There will be no fewer than 8 different labels available for the coin from PCGS and NGC combined, one of which will contain a hologram of the subject of the anniversary. Guidance for getting each of these labels will be confusing, and there will pages of threads about how much it costs to get each one and the likelihood of high grades for each one, which will be interspersed with complaints about how the mint handled distribution, online ordering, packaging, and delivery. The official milk-spot watch thread will pop up within 4 weeks of the first shipment. 2015 might be a good year, being the 100th anniversary of the founding of the company that the grandfather of the guy in charge of buying the floor waxing equipment at the Philadelphia mint once worked at.

A couple people will just enjoy the coin.

I am not a fan of the new colored coins, love bugs, etc...
Having said that, I own a hologram Maple and it is really nice. Simple but peculiar.
I would like to see an American Eagle with an hologram.

If a congressman sees this thread, I wouldn't be surprised if a hologram requirement is made a part of the next piece of coinage legislation.image

The Canadian Mint already has...along with their glow in the dark Dino Coin that is sold out. I wanted the DINO for my kids. image Now it will probably be really expensive in the secondary market. LINK

You may as well add a privy mark too that coin also. Imagine a yearly ASE with 40-50 different privy marks.

Holograms are just another gimmick to sell coins. If you like them, buy them and enjoy them. If you don't like them, ignore them and collect something else.

Probably when they have expanded the catalog to the extent the USPS did with stamps and nobody is collecting coins from the mint anymore.
