eBay selling item that is listed under different person in PSA Registry. Advice please!

Hi, I've rattled an eBay seller by letting him know the reason I wont bid on his card. Here is the meat of the conversation. He had no clue when my first question was "will you remove the card from the PSA registry prior to sale?". I feel if he removes it, then it's a good shot card's legit. He replied, that he has no clue what Im talking about, please elaborate. I replied, "I was interested in this card, but I did my homework because many fakes are sold on ebay. Here is why I think you may have a problem or at least makes me hesitant to make an offer to you: This card is pictured in the PSA set registry under a Mario Lemieux Player Set under the handle "steelcitystu". Steel city is most likely Pittsburgh, PA, USA. You seem to be in Monreal Quebec per the eBay auction. Are you two one in the same person? Both your auction and this PSA registered card have the same PSA serial number. So if you can get that card off the PSA registry, then I'd be confident that yours is real. Of course it could be Steelcitystu that has a fake or you. Or, If I may ask, how did you obtain it? Perhaps you bought it from him? You may wish to contact PSA if you are not steelcitystu and they can work with you. Anyway, as I said, if you get it removed the PSA registry, then you'll receive offers. Good luck." So what do you guys think? Am I paranoid? I know not to take a leap of faith when something doesnt seem right so before I shell out a few hundred bucks, I want certainty that the card is legit. Here's the auction: ebay 1983 Lemieux PSA 9 And here is the registry: 1983 Lemieux in PSA Registry
What do you all think is the right course of action?

He probably bought the card from someone who uses the registry but he does not. He is a 100% seller with almost 600 feedback. Nothing looks fishy at all.

Can you contact steelcitystu? It seems obvious Stu has not consigned the card. He may have sold it previously and failed to remove it from his registry but for that size of payment I would want some assurance.

I don't think anything fishy from seller either. But, I feel there's a slight chance that he may have been duped somewhere and just doesn't know it. Maybe just the card was just never taken off the registry. The card does look the same in both photos and the photos themselves are different.

There's nothing wrong with this listing.

There is a much more effective way of getting validation about an auction without accusing the seller of fraud. Simply ask for a scan of the back next time.

Im not accusing seller of fraud. Just looking for more assurance about this card. Im curious, in general, what would i look for with a scan of the back? In this particular case, the card has a plain white back. Is there something on the backside of the flip I should be looking for?
  • Always good to do homework.

Seller has other '83 graded Lemieux's, and Gretzky RC's, up for sale. All photos are taken against the same backdrop, a wood table.
Looks legit to me. Although if it is left in the registry, it may cause you an issue later on.

    Good Luck. NICE CARD

ebay Seller emailed me back and stated he bought it from steelcitystu in July 2009 but quickly asked how much I was offering. I'm not making an offer just yet as there is more homework to be done. I found steelcitystu on ebay (and shocker...he's from Pittsburgh!) but there is no ebay auction under his seller id for that card in his feedback. So I've sent steelcitystu a message via ebay if he could confirm if he, indeed, has sold it and if so, if he knows it was soaringstars (current ebay seller) and also if he could remove it from his registry. Once that happens, then I'll make an offer.

Some might think its anal, but for those that have been in any business know you have to dot your i's and cross your t's or you will get burnt.

I think requesting a scan of the back would lend proof of the seller's having the card in hand.

Nothing really wrong with doing your research, but seller/owner of the card does not have to remove item from set until it is sold, and even if they do, it does not guarantee you will get the card. A lot of people, myself included, occasionally forget to remove the cards from their inventories when they sell them.

As a seller, and depending on how they worded their request, I might be tempted to block any buyer making demands on me prior to bidding. My feelings might be they would be too much trouble.

Once you have the card, you can get it into your set even if the person who has it in his set won't remove it, by sending in a scan to PSA. This rarely happens though.

With eBay's buyer protection, you shouldn't have to worry as long as you pay with PayPal.

Good luck getting this card. Looks like a beauty!

Many folks do not remove cards from the registry when they sell them. It causes this issue. I have a few cards that I have to scan to PSA because of this.

Steelcitystu wrote back and confirmed he sold it and he lost his pw to the registry to remove it. That made me feel pretty confident, so I made an offer and picked up the card. If anyone knows 4-sharp corners, he hasnt written me back to my offer messages, although Im sure he gets a ton of emails a day, I'd like to offer on the Yzerman PSA 9 he has in that set that he has on eBay. He still needs to come down quite a bit though. Thanks all for the advice.

<< <i>If I have a small issue with PSA and one of their policies, it's with this process for Registry removal. If you purchase a card, have it in hand, then try to add it to your Registry and see it's in someone else's you need to use their system to send a removal request ... then you have to wait 3 days before sending in scans to have PSA remove it for you. >>

    Paul,
I have never had to wait if I knew the card was in another registry. I send the scans to Cosetta & team and they remove the card from the offending registry set immediately. I agree it is a pain to have to do this at all, but sometimes people forget to remove the card, lose their password, or just don't give a flip like 4SC!

    Cheers,
