I have a friend who would like to buy some gold, and he was asking me about a good source.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

If he's buying quantity, Tulving is good and gives good service. Avoid NW Territorial Mint - they will hold his money for over a month. Apmex is good service at a higher cost. I've had reasonable pricing from Scotsman and have no qualms about dealing with them. Silvertowne is worth a price check.

  • Could you clarify whether you are referring to classic eagles (i.e. $10 gold coins from pre-1933) or the modern bullion coins. I think the later are also referred to as American Eagles.

    Proof, Mint Uncirculated, or bullion./

    How about Buffalos?

Personally, If it were just bullion, I'd still go for the buffalo over the eagle.

I'd love to know if the Mint's premiums are still applicable:

The price of the gold bullion coins is based on the gold content plus a fixed percentage premium of the gold price. The pricing of the precious metal content is established at the time of the sale: The London P.M. (second) Gold Fix on the date following the day of the order, excluding federal government holidays. The fixed premiums are a percentage of the gold price: 3 percent, 5 percent, 7 percent and 9 percent for the 1, 1/2, 1/4 and 1/10 ounce coins, respectively. The set premiums charged cover all of the United States Mint’s manufacturing, marketing and distribution expenses. The United States Mint reserves the right to alter the pricing mechanisms and vary the premiums charged for the gold bullion coins as circumstances dictate. Any such change will not affect orders accepted prior to the announced change.

    ========================================

A minimum of 1,000 ounces of gold coins, composed of any combination of one-ounce and fractional pieces, in 500-ounce units (the standard packaged quantity). Purchases above the minimum must be in 500-ounce increments.
    - A maximum order quantity of 15,000 ounces or $20 million, whichever is less, will be imposed per purchaser per fixing.
    - The United States Mint reserves the right to sell less than the minimum quantity, vary the maximum quantity and to suspend all sales at any time as circumstances warrant.

This list from Kiplinger's is from Mar 2 / 2011

GOLD AP's at bottom of article

But just because they are an AP from the Mint doesn't mean they have the best prices. Shop around.

list in the Federal Register from Mar 26, 2012

The authorized distributors of American Gold Eagles for the United States Mint are published and known to be as follows: A-Mark Precious Metals, Scotia Mocatta, MTB, Prudential Securities, Coins 'N' Things, Commerzbank International, Deutsche Bank, and Tanaka Kinkinzoku.

  • With all these different answers, please explain why you wouldn't direct anyone to a site that compares all of the major sellers pricing without prejudice?
  • MsMorrisineMsMorrisine Posts: 35,683 ✭✭✭✭✭
    don't know the site

don't know how inclusive it is

don't know how accurate it is

will check it out though. thanks for the info. there is or was a need for such a site for one stop comparative pricing, just like someone needed coinflation, usacoinbook.com, etc. for their silver and gold coin values.

Because price is NOT the only factor.

Service, shipping speeds, availability, etc. all factor in.

And as a previous poster said, "how inclusive is the comparison site", probably not very inclusive form my experience with similar sites. They tend to be worth no more than spam.

Try them first. Bought some last year and they had the lowest over spot price around.

Most online sites are good as is the BST if you are interested in getting one coin, date not important but I have begun to collect 1/4 oz GAEs and other than a few common dates the pickings are slim out there.
