PCGS on the move and expanding....

bidaskbidask Posts: 14,017 ✭✭✭✭✭
I mean if PCGS thinks its important to have a footprint in world coins by virtue of their offices in Hong Kong and Paris, shouldn't we as collectors be open to the joys of collecting world coins?

I know for sure Asians are buying our high end gold coins......should we be in their markets too?

Muriel is about it and Don thinks its the future!

PCGS in Asia......

books for world coins as easy to obtain as books for us coins?

if not, I'd think coinfacts expansion would be a money maker.

Lets see, PCGS has offices in Europe, Asia and the US.....

Now if the South Americans would only invest in coins rather than cocaine......image

I would like to see PCGS expand to the entire world coin market, so long as it does not slow up their grading of my submissions.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

Hell, the cocaine business is a lot more profitable than numismatics will ever be.

World coins are fascinating and often complement what U.S. coins can't bring to the numismatic collecting table. The problem is Americans tend to be more insular than people from other comparable countries. Most don't travel to foreign countries (only 1/4 of Americans have passports), are largely monolingual and tend to stay away from the roads less traveled. Consequently for many American collectors foreign coins may be out of their comfort zone and getting them interested is a hard sell.

In the area of world coins, PCGS got out of the blocks slowly is still playing catch-up to another coin grading service which shall remain unnamed. Glad to see these moves.

Having lived and worked in several other countries, and traveled to many more, I have a fair amount of darkside coins. In many cases, they are far more attractive than American coins. Cheers, RickO

Most of my darkside stuff is low value items, mostly for the cool factor of most of it. I've got a huge copper slug (8 Kopek) from the 1600's, a Dos Escudos from Spain (my highest value darkside) and a bunch of low value ancients and spanish coins. I will probably venture into those areas deeper in the following years, but I've found it tough knowing how to price stuff. One always wants to be educated before making purchases, and I don't feel confident enough about any of the forgien areas.

At the 2016 FUN pcgs luncheon Don Willis said world coins is their big growth area and 'if your not already participating keep an eye on it."

For those who appreciate numismatic art, world coins are, in general, far superior to

    U.S. coins....Cheers, RickO

I am not a collector of the "dark side", but I wholeheartedly agree that some of the world coinage designs are more artistic than the U.S coins...especially the modern versions.

I'm not going to pretend that I have a crystal ball, but I will tell you that if you thought the US market was more fun in the 70's and 80's, you would probably love today's world coin market. Compared to the US market, it's easier to buy fresh raw world coins, grade points won't cost you an arm and a leg, the crack-out game has not yet polluted the market, and there's far more to be discovered and learned. Granted, many people are more interested in the precision, security and liquidity offered by US coins. But world coins are undoubtedly more fun.

I have a pretty large collection of ancients that I'd really like to start getting into PCGS plastic.

One thing I can't figure out.

PCGS divested itself of PCGS currency.

Yet, Don at the PCGS luncheon said the world currency market for them is equally as big as the world coin market.

Does PCGS own the world wide PCGS currency brand or not?

And I will further write and offer the following:

There is a substantial number of world coins with a lower value- in the range of $35-95. PCGS should consider a special tier for such coins to make the submissions viable for Collectors and PCGS. There are entire series of 19th and 20th century World coins that seem ripe for such an initiative-
