A Day at a Card Shop with MbMiller25 (Ripping took place)

Yesterday I drove to Charlotte to spend the day with Matt (MbMiller25). We decided to head to a baseball card shop right outside of Charlotte (Matthews, NC) I haven't been to a quality card shop in a very long time. The card shop was nestled in the downtown area of Matthews, which has a very pretty downtown by the way. I have to say as I walked into the card shop it brought back memories as a kid. The gentleman who owns the card shop couldn't have been any nicer, which makes you want to stay and talk sports and cards with him and the other patrons. The shop had a nice feel with an assortment of vintage and modern cards. Needless to say after looking around for a while I made my first purchase: a 1955 Topps Bob Skinner which will go nicely into my Pirates collection. The shop owner handed me a 2012 Topps Gold Rush Pedro Alvarez and he gave Matt a Ben Zobrist Gold Rush-- compliments of the house. I thought that was a very nice gesture.

Getting down to business… Matt and I were in the mood to rip. So after about 15 minutes of going back and forth on what we wanted we decided to split a box of 2011 Bowman Sterling (3 packs each) and a box of 2012 Topps Museum Collection (2 packs each). After seeing Mike Kelly (Miconelegacy) rip several boxes of the Topps Museum we thought this would be a fun rip.

First up: Bowman Sterling
My first pack I received 3 auto's one was a dual auto of Julio Teheran and Brandon Beachy # 19/25. It seemed like a good pull as Teheran is the #1 prospect for the Braves.
I also pulled a Brandon Nimmo auto. There weren’t any huge hits; mostly high school players that we'll have to wait and see in the next few years.

Now onto the 2012 Topps Museum. My first pack I pulled a Adam Jones jersey / patch card # 18/35, and then Matt pulled an Adrian Gonzalez quad jersey / patch card # to 99.

Matt was up next and pulled a friggin’ Andrew McCutchen auto / swatch card # 15/25. I couldn't believe it. As a Pirate fan that would have been a great pull! I pulled a Jeremy Hellickson Archival Auto #100/299. Mind you, Matt's a Rays fan. Clearly, we both opened the wrong packs! image

I still had the urge to rip and the shop owner had two pack remaining from a opened box of Topps Museum. The owner said there's an auto and a patch pack remaining. The auto/patch card was pulled earlier in the day by a kid who pulled a Evan Longoria. I like to gamble so I purchased a pack. I pulled the auto but it was of NY Yankee Michael Pineda. $55 well spent.

When we got back from dinner, Matt and I worked out a trade and I ended up with the McCutchen and Matt ended up with the Hellickson and Teheran/Beachy dual auto. We both had a nice day and it was great to see Matt and his family

Bobby, sounds like you and Matt had a great time. I used to go to that shop (AAA Collectibles) all the time when I lived in Charlotte. The owner and his wife were absolutlely the nicest people in the world.

Sounds like you had a great time... Baltimore is right around the corner! Are we going to have the CU round table again? Sadly, no O's games. And the invitation is open for you and Matt (and a few others) to join us for breakfast at Miss Shirley's on Saturday before the show... Dasm good eats!

The Cubs are at the Nationals that weekend, and it's only 40 miles south of the Convention Center. image

I don't know if you knew this or not, but the cool thing about patch cards with the MLB hologram is that you can trace the jersey to the exact date it was used on.

Hologram number FJ722112 was located in the MLB Authentication Database under GAME-USED JERSEY.

Great information, I never knew that. Makes that McCutchen piece, all that much more cool for Bobby. Good Times had yesterday. Wish we could do that more often.

I went by AAA Collectibles today on my way back to Atlanta from the Charlotte Motor Speedway and the April Autofair. Bob was great to talk with and made me feel very welcome. I picked up a box of the 2011 Bowman Sterling, and looked through his many boxes of raw 61 & 73 Topps, which were packed with quality raw semi-stars and commons. I look forward to working with him to find some worthy stock to finish my 61T graded set!

Thanks Bobby & Matt for the tip on this great store!
