I believe that most are "helped" out, but it's been that way for a long time.

$721? Say what? 21 bidders. Who are these guys? It's not even a whole dollar.

If you had $721 to spend would this be how you would do it?

According to mint I think they are considered stolen in many cases.

I agree. Any process that manufactures millions (or billions) of an item will produce hundreds, even thousands, that are below expectations. And no matter how hard you try, a few will get eventually "escape".

Well said. Machines break and people make mistakes.

    ....................................................

I did not reply to this thread earlier as it was a "live" auction and I think it is poor taste to start threads on live auctions as it drives up the price for those bidding on it.

This coin was actually on my watch list as it is so awesome. Extremely rare, one-of-kind. The scratches did bother me, but it is still a wow error.

I was planning on bidding on two other awesome errors by the same seller. One of them got bid up way high and was over what my nuke bid would have been. I did get the other very cool triple struck Sac and I hope that this thread didn't cost me more because it alerted many to this seller.

As to the comment about this being the fault of union work, wow that is political statement and there is no need for that here on a coin forum, just amazing.

Apparently there was just enough meat left on the would be coin to escape the riddler machine. Errors as such are often found in bulk orders.

Anyone heard anything lately about the dealer suspected in case involving the errors that were pilfered from the Mint over a period of years just recently??

No doubt that mass automated production will produce errors. The quality system should be such that escapes are minimized. However, with bulk shipments such as bags of coins, filled from bins, the likelihood of escapes increases. At such volume, 100% inspection is out of the question. Pilfering is also known to occur. Aren't some Presidential dollars shipped directly to consumers?

    This could happen.

Also don't forget that the new Schuler (sic?) horizontal presses used by the Mint can strike as many as twelve coins per second, meaning a coin like that could have resulted from a feeder jam that self-cleared before the press operator had enough time to even turn his head.

Does anybody have a good picture/diagram/heiroglyph of the feed mechanism on these new presses? I got to stand right next to one of them while it was running, and it moves so fast you can't see a blank thing!!!

Since I've handled the coin, my gut reaction on how it got out is that, to my knowledge, the last line of resistance for errors is a size check. If a coin is too large (off-center, broadstruck, etc.) it won't fit through a hole and thus won't be released. Because of the size of the clips, even though part of the coin is expanded, I don't think it has dimensions larger than a standard dollar, so it could still fit through. As has been mentioned, at the speed at which the presses operate, an error like this could be made and forgotten in the blink of an eye. Overall, it's a really neat and unique coin.

The above doesn't explain the also-mentioned triple-struck Sac, which is certainly larger than a standard dollar, but as that coin is a few years older, it may well has come out before the Mint really clamped down on errors. It's also a great piece, especially with a technically superb obverse.
