What's this?

Hello. I'm a baseball card guy, but my father gave me this a long time ago.

What is it?
I don't expect it goes for much based on the condition, but value?

Thanks in advance.

Can you also post a picture of the reverse? It would help to evaluate the coin. Interesting die break and what appears to be a cud. Cheers, RickO

First off, do not clean or attempt to clean this coin in any manner whatsoever. This is a Draped Bust half dollar from 1806. The coin has pretty good meat still left on it and, if this is a scan and I am interpreting it correctly, looks like it might have good color, too. This looks to be an 1806/5 with a die marriage of O.104 based upon the obverse. This die marriage produced some fairly scarce coins and this piece, depending upon what the reverse looks like, too, could be worth four-figures.

From what I see so far, it looks pretty nice and valuable to me, but it's all relative I suppose.
Edited to add now that the rev pic is posted, yes, a nice original coin, worth at least a few hundred dollars, or more
depending on the die marriage and die state and the demand for it from specialists.

It looks like a O-104a, R-5. Seems like a later die state.

Cud at U, but not at ITE.

Nice! Listen to Tom. Take care of it and don't try to improve it!

It should be submitted for grading, preferably by PCGS.

Recent auctions for graded 1806/5 O.104s around F12 condition have been in the $600-800 range.

I'd like to grade it, but don't want to join (another) collector's club. What are my options?

I would make sure you know the coin dealer like a family member or you may not get it back..Get a receipt from the dealer saying they sent it in with insurrance..I went through the mistake of taking a coin to a dealer to send in a few years ago when i started collecting coins and he told me it was lost somewhere in the process 2 months later..$500.00 down the drain..Never again

I have already offered to do the PCGS submission for MithrilMan and he has accepted the offer. Of course, he is free to change his mind at any time and not take me up on the offer.

MithrilMan - TomB is a good guy to help you with this. You are good to go with him.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

First off, I'd like to thank Tom B for his invaluable assistance in helping me with the grading of this coin. As I mentioned, I'm not a coin guy and post exclusively on the card forum. I thought it would be cool to encapsulate this coin that has been in my family for many decades. He also provided an amazing photograph of the coin, which I have attached below. I am now privy to the grade, and it will be in transit to me soon. In the meantime (like we do on the other forum) if you'd like to submit your guesses; I'll post the graded pic when I have it and Tom B can provide his thoughts then.

    Thanks again Tom B!
