In some places near the border you can just spend them like any USA coin. They are virtually at par vs. the dollar these days, unlike 15 years ago when their dollar was worth a lot less. That said I have a large accumulation of them because I don't like spending them, so into a large freezer bag they go and then sometime I am going to give them to someone in my wife's family - they are all Canucks.

good question ! i have over 25 dollars worth ....... here in Syracuse, my dump bank spits them all out and i'm always adding to the pile thru roll searching

maybe someday i'll go to Toronto but first i have to get a passport.

if you are member at a coin club ..maybe you can put them on the auction table for face ..there might be a Canadian coin collector there ?

This is funny. I have a personal experience trying to spend Candian money near the border. I live in metro Detroit and 2 or 3 times a year visit Canada. Last summer on our way back from Grand Bend we stopped at Tim Hortons of I-94 near St. Clair Michigan, about 10 miles or so from the border. I figured TH is a Candian franchise, I'm near the border, I'll spend the 5 or 7 dollars Candian leftover from my trip at the TH drivethru and get a bite.

Wrong! This particular franchise (owned by a Candian citizen) has a specific policy against accepting Candian funds.

When I inquired with the owner he told me that the reason is that the US banks discount severly and take advantage by far than the actual exchange. He told me that if he gets some Candian change or bills, he waits and brings them into Canada on his return trip.

Go figure. I just hang on to them until my next trip. By the way I love to visit Canada. Great neighbor for the US to have.

When I was a busy traveler, I'd just exchange them at the currency exchange at any international airport. Sure, you take a hit, but at least you are rid of them.

My bank here in Putnam, Connecticut refuses to take Canadian coins. But the gas stations take them.

Not many banks take Canadian coins. I live on the border and I know of one bank that will give 85% exchange for coins. Almost no stores around here will take a large amount of coins and our economy is basically held up by Canadian shoppers.

My sons & I collect Canadian coins, and are always looking to keep current with recent dates from cents thru Twoonies. We'd be more than happy to swap for any of the dates anyone has that we need and prevent their heading back to Canada, any U.S. store that might accept them, or any coin exchange.

If anyone above in this post is willing to check thru their Canadian change for the following dates & quantities, I'd love to hear from you & work something out. And same holds for anyone from Canada who's reading this & may have some dates we need.

    Thanks in advance!

I exchange them on e-bay, every single time I have listed them, they bring equal to us $ , you just have to pay the fee's . well worth it too me as I am 1500 miles from the border.

I just save them up till I get a suffient amount to sell.

Often times those Canadian coins will work in vending machines and parking meters. As others have said many businesses near the border will accept Canadian currency.

Visiting Canada used to be simple and non-aggravating. For the last half decade ever since the U.S. demanded that Canada toughen up their immigration controls the CBSA officials at the Canadian ports of entries have been overbearing, rude, stingy and generally unpleasant. In fact I think they're now on par if not worse than the CBP folks. In the grand scheme of things they're an ally to the U.S. but trying to enter the country you'd think otherwise.

Montreal is an intersting place but my favorite major Canadian city by far is still Vancouver.

    Interesting,

My favorite Canadian city (ok, little village) is Cheticamp in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.

I once found a 1921 Canadian quarter in change in Igonish Beach, Cape Breton in 1971!

I have to second your recommendation of Vancouver as a top destination in Canada! When I was younger, my bro & I flew to Seattle, took a hoverboat to Vancouver/Victoria Island to stay in a bed & breakfast during the Vancouver Expo. We toured there & then headed over to Banff/Jasper. Some of the most beautiful scenery around!!
