Auction Labels left on holders?

Hello. I'm new to the message board. I recently bought a coin from Heritage Auctions and it came with Heritage Auction labels on each side of the holder. Had the lot number and a bar code. Should these be taken off or left on? Is it an auction record worth leaving on the holder? Does it hurt the holder? Wondering if ya'll could tell me what you do. Thanks.

Unless it has a green or gold CAC beanie, you can safely remove the Auction house labels. Especially if its a slabbed coin. You can always trace the cert in auction records.

I remove all stickers and neatly adhere them to the auction invoice for record keeping.

Off with the labels... just clutters up a nice coin/slab. Cheers, RickO

Peel them off very slowly, as you do not want to remove some of the hologram on the reverse or the gold PCGS logo that is on the green tag holders.

As stated above, I, too, place the stickers on the invoice from the auction house. If I have the auction catalog, I include the page from the auction catalog that has the coin, along with the catalog cover in my records.

The old no-line fatty NGC slabs with the full width holograms were particularly susceptible to having the hologram come off with the label. I coat the label with Goo-gone and let it soak for awhile before removing the label. Goo-gone won't hurt the hologram or the slab and it loosens the glue on the label.

Some people treat the auction labels as a form of provenance. Personally with very few exceptions I always remove them.

Does the label still have to be on the slab for them to honor that?

If the slab serial numbers match there won't be a problem. Labels are not necessary.

When I unwrap a coin which has sticky labels, I take one quick glance at the coin, then off with the labels. Next, I give the coin a better look, then usually try to polish the plastic a bit. I never keep the sticky labels.

Unless it is a very important sale (like a once every five year sale - Ford, Eliasberg, Pittman, etc.) I'd throw it out.

Just purchased something ex. Ford and I am glad the previous owner saved the lot ticket.

I guess Im one of the few who leave them on. No real reason for me take them off, only haveing purchased 4-5 coins through heritage they dont bother me.
  • lkeigwinlkeigwin Posts: 16,893 ✭✭✭✭✭
If they don't interfere with viewing or shooting the coin I usually leave them on. Often I trim off the bottom...with Heritage's name and phone number. But as a rule I save all stickers and provenance tags. Dealer tags with coded prices and other superfluous data always go. Annoying. And I clean up the residue.

  • Wow, thank you all for the overwhelming responses. I'm going to love this message board. Think I'll carefully remove and save the label. Like the idea of attaching them to the invoice. Thanks all.
