"karat" or "carat" to define gold?

Do you use the "karat" or the "carat" spelling to define the fineness of your fabricated gold?

When I write in english I prefer karat, though to me it sounds better with the C (in italian is carato)

I had no idea but it sounds quite right. CT for diamond and KT for gold.

Alloyed stuff, like 14kt rings and chains, as opposed to 24kt bullion ingots or rounds.
