  • that is probably the most closely guarded intel in hobby wrestlingcardking. How many sets roughly has he sold off sealed in recent years?

I don't think there are too many of them....

Brian has four left of the 83 sets. I could have bought them all and told him to put them on EBAY as he deserves to get to sell them for a good price.

  • Probably not many 83 sets left then as well.

    does wrestleprints post here?

With so much interest and price explosion on these sets. I know dpeck got the big story in SMR. I hope they do something with narrvaro and wrestlecardkings autograph sets and all psa/dna ones they have done in future issue of SMR. Also don't be surprised if Beckett or other hobby magazines feature stories on this stuff. If that happens prices ever skyrocket more.

Would be interesting to see a year by year price graph on sets and keycards.

I am just hoping to get a lot of the mid-tier wrestlers in red flips which can be a challenge as PSA/DNA may not have a template on many of those guys. I'd like nothing more than to have them all in red flips some day and I have over half right now. I am also picky about grades for my signed cards. I am trying to get most of them in near mint if possible but many of these wrestlers died early and there is very little to chose from.

Amazingly enough, Navarro is just a Dick Murdoch away from having the 1982 A set completely autographed. I have that card in my possession. I'll work on trying to dig one up and think I know of two others out there. Do not think there is many more than that.

    Nhl,

The number of sealed sets is obviously unknown but there can not be too many more. Many of the recent packs that have sold will certainly get busted for grading I would think so we should see some fresh graded material hit the market is the coming weeks or months for sure.

I have been going through my raw cards to find cards that have a strong shot at 8's and I have identified a number that I plan to submit. I can tell you one thing, centering is a huge problem with a ton of these cards. I can't tell you how many cards I would look at and say man if that had better centering. Or wow that centering is perfect but the lower corners are touched.

As I have said before, the sealed sets are no guarantee of nice cards. Every sealed set of the 83 cards I opened had corner damage. On the flip side the only set of the 82A I opened I hit the jackpot and got a lot of nice cards including some 10's. If the sealed sets produce razor sharp corners you may still get PSA 7's or PSA 8's depending on the centering and printing issues. This to me is one of the things that make these cards so interesting in high grades.

It is really nice to see these cards in PSA 8 finally get their due. There was an auction that went off a day or so ago with three PSA 8's that went for $456. Yes that sounds high but find me some loose Chrusher's in a PSA 8. Not happening easily at all. That card is insane. There are two ways the 82A set was packed. One with the cards mixed up and the Chusher on the back and one with The Destroyer on the back. There are only four PSA 8's and I have three of them and one PSA 9 that is tucked away in someone's collection that is worth a lot of money for sure.

The key cards believe it or not have not seen as big of a run up. The Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair and Andre The Giant cards took off in early 2010 and the rest of the set has been playing major catch up. The Hogan card had fallen a great deal into the late 2010 time frame but is once again back to it's highs and then some on PSA 7's and cards of that quality. My dealer friend thinks a PSA 9 Hulk Hogan could go for $1,500+. The Andre card is booming at the moment. There is no telling what a PSA 7, PSA 8 or PSA 9 would bring at this moment. I purchased my PSA 9 less then two months ago for $1,820 and feel good with that price. The Ric Flair card is much easier in strong condition and his popularity seems to have fallen off some. That being said there has not been a new PSA 10 hit in over 18 months so I think those could sell for a nice price currently too. There was a recent PSA 9 sell for $305 and that is back to where it was in the 2010 time frame.

Since so many of the cards never trade it is really hard to price them currently. I think a few of my Pop 1 cards like the Dusty Rhodes PSA 10, The Junkyard Dog PSA 10, Bruno Sammartino PSA 10, Ted Dibiase PSA 10, Mil Mascaras PSA 9, Di++ The Bruiser PSA 10 and others could go for a strong number and it would be much higher then recent sales of $300+ for some of the PSA 10's.

I still think these cards have a ways to go. I am not sure if recent sales of 82A PSA 9's of over $200 will be the norm but on the lower population cards we have not seen the peak. There have been a few buyers come into the market with deep pockets and bid to win. If a handful more enter the fray it is going to get really wild. The Matt Borne card I needed recently sold for $745, that in my mind broke the barrier for what these can sell for.

To answer your question about a price graph, it in all honesty for many it would look like an internet stock from 1999. That is why as I said above some of the cards may taper off some but we are in the second stage of the bull market for these and the run is not over.

Wow strong finish on the 83 set. No clue who that is that came at the end.

Same buyer won the 1982 Wrestling All Stars Series A for $1,944.

  • I'm gonna go out on a limb here and predict someone is gonna make an attempt at Dpeck's glory. Imagine if this is just the tip of the craziness? >>

I tend do agree, it's going to be a very expensive process for that person, but I'm sure someone or a few are trying.

I think with D's position, it will only increase the value of his collection. Which is the best 1982 Wrestling Stars set and collection in the world, period.

It's a long shot for someone to try to top his set/collection in high grade.

  • Could be someone making run a dpeck. My guess is it just some big fans/collectors picking up on these sets. 80's wrestling was so popular and basically these sets are who's who of old school rookie cards. Value will always be there.

Wonder if one of the big dealers will take chance on sealed sets and just send them all in to be graded. Hitting a few 9's pays for a lot.

See a real nice Grand Wizard 10 on ebay.

There are a few new buyers of the graded cards making a statement. There is a guy from Atlanta that is buying up as much as he can and buying multiples too.

The under bidder on these has been winning a lot of the graded auctions and I am not sure what his motives are. He seems to be trying to put together a graded run of the 82 sets but not certain.

I think that a number of people just realize that these are cool cards and want to get a complete set.

I did a run through and have over 40 cards that are either a Pop 1 or I own all of the top grade for that card.

I made it clear in the article that you could not recreate my sets and I realize it came across as arrogant and that was not the point. It is just not mathematically possible to gain that many new cards that are better then mine. I have over 2,250 cards at this point so it has taken a ton of product to get my sets to the point they are at. Not to mention I am still a buyer.

Personally I think this is great. I obviously like seeing the higher prices but I also think that over time more people will realize how rare these cards are in high grade and that will continue to be reflected in the prices.

Wrestling today is a travesty compared to the time when most of these performers were either living or working. I love the fact that an old wrestling collectible is getting the respect it deserves.
  • Wizard sold for $350ish...pretty strong sale.

Another 1982 set is up, but Andre looks pretty dinged with that corner...

That set is a major gamble. I sent him an email asking about the corner damage and then added those comments. I think there is a high likely hood all of the cards have a dinged corner. If someone wants to go to Vegas that is the set.

I picked up a sealed set of the 1982 A off EBAY and it came in the mail today. It was in much worse shape then I could tell from the scan and since the price was reasonable I decided to rip away.

Most of the cards had corner damage but fortunately the Hogan and Flair were pretty good. The Andre was brutal!

There might be a few that are gradable other then these but not many.

This really reinforces why this set is so tough in high grade. I purchased another sealed set earlier this year where the first few cards are damaged and have resisted the temptation to open it.

I may break down and bust it open soon after seeing where the Hogan and Flair are in the sealed set.

Here is an example of why the Andre is so tough. This card has a horrible surface and damaged corners.

Well I broke down and opened my final sealed pack. I knew a few of the cards were damaged. I managed to keep this sealed for six months.

    What a disaster.

Every single card has a smashed upper left corner. This one hurts.

Bummer, that really stinks. Hopefully you can get a few signed to offset the pain.
  • Roughly how much does that sealed pack go for? Don't worry I'm no competition for you. image

They have come down a lot. I paid $900 for the one that was a bust. I got lucky and someone who did not realize the prices had risen listed the first one I posted last night for $300.

When this thread was started the set that was listed and sold and paid for went for $1,725 or so.

This is pretty funny. I was the guy that went to Vegas and lost this time!
