  • If I may add a different perspective to this thread. I am basically a coin collector. I collected cards when I was kid in the early 60's and picked it up again in 86. Talk about bad timing. I got away from cards in 90 and come here to see what is happening in the hobby. Back to my different perspective. As a coin collector I don't know a living soul that collects coins. The only place I can talk about my wins and losses is on the U.S. Coin Forum. I hope this is not Dav's case but sometimes this is a person's only outlet to showcase their triumphs with knowledgeable collectors. Just my 2¢ worth.

Congrats to Davalillo on all the completed sets. It takes a lot of dedication to finish all those sets along with money.
Really Davalillo had the best advice to the OP, if you don't like his posts don't read them. Just like you wouldn't read a newspaper article if the headline doesn't interest you.

100% agree, I didnt have 1 person to share my Football cards with other than here, this website is basically the only gathering of collectors in town for many of us.

    Hiya Ron

That nails it for many! If I didn't the net - I would be talking to our two pets cause my wife could give a rats ass! She's my best friend of 31 yrs. - but when it comes to cards and memorabilia? She goes brain dead.

A little late to the party but you can add me to the chorus. I like reading these posts. I wish Spence and the other heavy hitters would drop by from time to time.

If we all got mad at people who do things we can't, we wouldn't be paying much attention to professional sports in the first place.

I personally am fine with the posts, but I kinda understand the spirit of what the OP says. For me, if I ever finished a set you'd be getting a HUGE post about it. But, I sometimes do feel a little inferior around here. Guys come on here and talk about dropping a few thousand here or a few thousand there, or buying a few cases of something just for the fun of ripping, or going to a show and not finding much so only spending $1500. I couldn't do that in my wildest dreams. I'm a high school chemistry teacher with a daughter in college. I might have $2000-$3000 a year to spend on cards. The only other way I can afford to buy anything is to sell stuff that I already have. So, for me, a BIG purchase is a card worth a couple hundred bucks. For some guys here, that's chump change.

All that being said, Jim has never been one to flaunt his collection. So, I've enjoyed reading his posts. But, I do understand how some people that aren't as fortunate could feel a little overwhelmed. Lets not crucify the OP here. I don't think he is trying to be a jerk about it.

Agreed. I jumped on Paul too. I am in the same boat that a $300 card IS a HUGE purchase for me.

To take some of the pressure and guilt off of Jim, he could send me the odd number sets to reduce his burden. image

Jim's progress posts are entertaining and, darnit, I'm jealous. Keep 'em coming.

    << <i>Mike,

You know me as well as anyone. Maybe better. I never remember you getting mad at me but then again I forget a lot of the stuff that is said here. If Ncdolfan wants to see pictures of my cards I do have a blog where I talk about my top 1500 songs of all time plus put up scans of my cards. As you say though I couldn't put up a scan if my life depended on it. I have to wait for my son or daughter to visit and ask them to do it for me. Thanks for the support from my hobby friends. I have often been controversial but i never recall having my posts called boring. Will try harder to make them more interesting.

    Any time Jim.

Wanna "jazz" it up a bit? This'll work every time!

I just saw this thread, and just wanted to add another voice for Jim to keep posting away. I like see others progress in their sets, especially the ambitious ones like what Jim is doing. As others have said, I wish that Donald Spence and Marshall Fogel would also post on these boards, their knowledge and how tough it was to pick up certain cards.

Almost there... I believe the word you are looking for is "personal". Personal. When Windows puts a red underline under a big word, that doesn't mean you did something awesome.

    Carry on. >>

Been almost a week and that line still cracks me up. Well done Jeff!

Like Steve...I was invited as well to the BBQ party Jim held at his home. As a matter of fact...Jim invited any board member that was interested. I was unable to attend, but somebody who did go took a few pics with Jims permission. They were posted on here at one time, but I cannot locate them while doing a search.

Jim is a class act and I enjoy reading about his accomplishments.
