I think #1 or #2 might be able to squeak by, even though they should not by the "letter of the law".

By all rights, none of them should qualify. It really depends on the grader's mood when he sees them.

  • I vote no (unfortunately) on all three. There are a couple of deep nicks on the steps that preclude (for me) a FS designation on coin 1 and there is a large contact mark across the bottom steps on coin 2. The marks are deep enough to interrupt the lines, so I think PCGS will say no to the FS designation.

Did you see the multiple ticks and the scratch running accross the steps on the pcgs 64 fs example?

But the ticks and scratch running across the steps on the Coin Facts plate coin do not appear to be as deep (at least on my screen). I stick by my original comments, but if one of the coins were to receive the designation, I would pick coin #1. You could always send it under the modern tier for $14. I would consider it if I were you.

P.S. The TPGs do appear to apply the definition inconsistently making it hard to guess whether a designation will result.

The #1 reverse should full step. As for the plate coin, PCGS was inconsistent for years attributing the full step Jeffs. Lot's of full step labels containing non full step coins. As a collector of the series, it's imperative that you know what's accepted by the collecting community as a full step. Heavy price to be paid at the sale of your collection if you didn't understand this. JMHO Mel

#1 and #2 are going to be graded. I purchased this roll for $5. Most of the time when you open a bu roll of 55d's they are super flat and lifeless. This was a nice change.

Not my series but how would these be FS when the first to second stair (at stair bottom) interval is almost completely "mushed" or merged together?

I don't think any will get the FS designation as there is no underside groove to the bottom step so it is not a step IMHO.

Should be "NO," but steps are a crap shoot.
  • #1 looks like it might have 5 full steps. The other two look to have bridges between steps so I wouldn't try them.

PCGS gives the full step designation to coins which have the top 5 showing -- the 6th step does not need to be defined at all. Except for issues after some date in the 90's where all six steps are required for coins struck since then.

NGC gives out two designations 5FS and 6FS to denote whether the coin has 5 or 6 steps.

wonderful article that member lehigh wrote about the FS designation

Like a few others have said, not my series, but I've looked at a few of these. From what I've seen in PCGS holders, I'd say maybe on #1, probably not on #2, and no way on #3. If #1 did not make it I would NOT be surprised - I'd say you have 25% yes / 75% no odds.

According to the coinfacts FS example, coins 1 & 2 should get the designation. On the tough dates its often a roll of the dice IMO.

NO to all 3. In the early days of fs, #1 probably would have made it. IMO, PCGS now rejects any coin that is the least bit questionable.

Regarding #1, it could be argued that there is bridging of steps 3-4 under pillar 2 and that there is discontinuity of step 5 under pillar 3 due to a bagmark/planchet abrasion. In recent years, have seen PCGS deny fs status to clear 5 1/2 + step coins because of post-strike bagmark.

Coins such as these should command a premium IMO because they are near fs examples of dates hard to find with fs.

I have been through probably 20 OBW rolls of gem 55d rolls and they NEVER look like these coins. So you can see why I am excited. Most f the time you would be lucky to find any steps left at all.

#1 may have a shot from the pic, if so only by a squeak,
#2 & #3 probabley not, BUT those are an anomaly for
1955 D's and a good find, Congrats either way it goes

I have always thought Full anything should be determined by strike detail. I other words if the steps were fully struck they are FS even if the steps take a hit going down the shoot that bridges some. If this were the case #1 would FS and the other 2 no. But if they call it like they do on FB dimes.......no go....because of bridge caused by hit.
  • BigDowgieBigDowgie Posts: 1,774 ✭✭✭✭
First coin has a shot at FS designation, but the others not. Even if you get FS designation on the first coin and you want to sell it, you now have to find a buyer that can live with the questionable steps. Just because the hollder says FS does not make it so.

    Great coins by the way!
  • keetskeets Posts: 25,351 ✭✭✭✭✭
typical responses, even by collectors of the series who know better(or should know better). a week or two ago i started a thread which asked about "hopeful" submissions and this thread only highlights that fact. by PCGS' own definition in their own publication these coins should not be graded as having Full Steps, but judging by what i see in holders and results posted by some respondents in other threads i'd say they all have at least a 50-50 chance at being so designated. given the potential payoff i suppose it's worth "hoping" that they are FS and just sending them in makes sense from that viewpoint.

I agree with keets on the "typical responses" point, but that is why we have a forum and open up for opinions. The pictures don't show the whole coin, but a well struck, clean, lusterous 1955-D is tough. If the first coin possesses these qualities and is that close to possible FS designation, it is worthy of grading. There are collectors out there that are looking for quality coins that are not "full steppers". I will admit, my 1955-D is one of those of questionable completeness, but it's one of those better quality coins (in my opinion). This and possible some of the other coins are of higher quality and deserve a premium and just not filler coin pricing. As always, it comes down to what you want to do, no matter what some of these clowns think!
