Does anyone know what this might possibly be?

If you take a look at the eagles left wing (on your right as you look at it on screen) you'll see a small horizontal line going across. Does this look like toning or is it possibly a scratch on the holder and maybe they photoshopped it out? When I look at it, it almost looks like it's over the coin and not into it. If it was toning I would think there would be other places with it, but overall the coin looks pretty clean. What do you think? If you click the coin after the image comes up it is magnified many times. link

To me, it looks like either something on the plastic or an attempt at photoshopping a scratch has been made... Cheers, RickO

I agree ... on the plastic or hasty Photoshop work.

Something on the slab which has been focused past.

I very highly doubt that's a Photoshop effect.

Looks like a piece of lint oh the plastic to me.

  • Airplanenut is on to something. I looked - it seems at first part of the fabric of the coin but its a little fuzzy as thought it was too close to the focal point. In Photoshop then whole coins look wierd to me - but that "Line" doe behave slightly differently. I wondered of it could be bad copper mix? IDK. It looks a tad funny. Could be slab, lint, anything, Hard to say. The color in interesting. Alas, from a pic...hmm - last night there was a $20 gold, slabbed, with grades guessed at 55-64!

Yes, I would agree, to me, It looks like maybe, even a strand of fiber, got caught in between the coin and plastic.image

Hard to tell. My best guess is a scuff on the plastic.

If it were a copper inclusion in the coin, I would expect it to be darker unless the coin had been cleaned, and the coin does not appear to have been cleaned.

Have you tried asking the coin's owner?

This coin is in the Stack'sBowers auction in Baltimore later this month. I have thought about calling them but I don't think I would get an answer from any of the CS people. They probably would try to get me in contact with whomever images their lots, and even then I probably won't get an answer.

Perhaps a forum member who will be reviewing their auction lots could take a look and report back to us.
