    The Lexington was issued in a wooden slide top box... Yet there's counterfeit copies known of the boxes too.

    The Lexington commem was often sold in a box very similar to this. However, there are known replicas of this box. I'd have to put my grubby mitts on the box to say whether this was a genuine box or fake. The box itself seems to be in "good" condition. However, these boxes are fairly common and you should be able to find one without the annoying writing and a much more clear stamp imprint.

    In far better condition the sliding lid would have a black imprint of the coins obverse Minuteman and the bottom of the box a black imprint of the coins reverse Belfry.

    I can't imagine that a wooden box is the best way to store a coin---especially if there is room for the coin to slide around and there is no soft cloth lining.

    The storage medium may have not been the best idea, however, the boxes do leave little room for the coin to move around. In fact, I think most markings are from the mint and not the storage medium. Just my opinion.

    Anyone know what kind of wood was used? Were they sealed with oil, varnish, or lacquer? The reason I'm asking is that some wood types out gas vapors that tone silver coins.

    The lexington boxes are made of pine wood. They are not lacquered or varnished. Just plain jane pine with the minuteman+ stamps.

    I have a pretty Lex that came out of its wooden box, which I suspect is made of pine, sold to me by TomB years ago, and the coin has a pretty uniform green color that mutes the luster. These coins can range from green to dull grey depending on how long and under what conditions they were stored in their boxes.
    The boxes are very common and might be worth up to $50 in nice condition.

    Oh, and to go on record, PCGS hardly grades these things appropriately in my experience. In my Lexington submissions for the two boxes shown, I've received the coins back on 3 occasions for PVC. Yes, this is the green toning we get. PCGS hates the toning so much, they say its PVC although it's really not. I'll further add that many of the original skinned Lexingtons will be lost due to this happening with PCGS. It's kind of a shame, really.
