Sarasota, FL Coin Show Report

Warning, this is primarily from a Widget Mercury Dime Variety perspective...although a few other items will be touched on as well.
WOW, you are still reading this...well, good for you!
I really wanted to go on Friday but could not so I went on Saturday. I arrived there around 10:10 AM, just after the open. I even had my kiddos with me.
My priorities were 4-fold. Sell some melt that I had found roll searching last year, Cherrypick Mercury Dime Varieties, have a few good conversations with folks and meet up with MFH (Mike).
First of all, kuddos to my kiddos (6 and 7 years old). They were awesome for the approx 3 hours that we were there. The dealers were very nice to them as well. One dealer is known for his Chocolate Chip Cookies...and Oatmeal Cookies as well. He did not disappoint! Thank you! He also had his dog with him. Very nice pup! The kids enjoyed stopping there. I tried to find something in his inventory but there just wasn't much there for me. He made us feel very welcome and we will certainly visit with him in the future! I was checking though one particular dealer's inventory for about 10 minutes and my kids sat down across the aisle with the folks from Teletrade/Local Coin Club...they were great! Wow, thanks guys! Some really great people at this show. I sold a ton of melt at 24x face...not bad. Since silver closed at 25x face on Friday that was fine with me. Everyone needs to make a dollar. Granted, I made my share considering all of the stuff I sold I had found from roll searching.
I now had a good bit of cash in case I found new toys to buy.
About that time, maybe 10:20-10:30, MFH showed up. It was great to see a familiar and friendly face...not to mention the pretty metal discs he had with him. HOLY SMOKES!!! I always enjoy that portion of our visit. I was on a mission...to search that entire building for Mercury Dime Varieties. The first variety I found was from a dealer that I had spent some time with last fall...checking his inventory. He was very nice. The coin was a 1934-D/D FS-501. It is a very cool variety and easy to 'pick. The dealer had it raw and graded it AU+ but it was in fact only EF. AU Retail is about $30. EF Retail is about $15. He had the coin priced at $34. YIKES! I was not going to try to bargain with him. I was not going to 'pick the coin even. My primary focus is on Mint State examples of Mercury Dime Varieties...if I can Cherrypick a circulated example for a really good price, then I will get it but otherwise...I will not waste my money. So, after checking all of his inventory and not finding anything else, I decided to help the dealer with his inventory. I had him pull the coin out of his case again. I told him to get a pen so he could write on the 2x2. He was quite puzzled. I told him to get his loupe, a 16x in this case. I explained to him that the coin was a very nice EF example of the FS-501 RPM and new to the recent Cherrypickers' book on page 61. I suggested that a price in the range of $35-40 might be in order. He seemed to be very thankful and I went on my way.
I had another similar experience with an AU 1942-D/D. I did not want the coin and it was NOT the Cherrypickers' Variety. It was just one of the 6 known RPMs for the date is all. I informed the dealer and he seemed thankful.
I found what I thought was a 1935-S/S FS-501 in AU RAW...only to get home and realize it was not the FS-501. There is something going on with the MM but it was not the FS-501...that's for sure. Only $10 flushed down the toilet. Oh well. That happens with poor lighting, grimy 2x2 plastic slid into another plastic...and with the coin having a little extra dirt around the MM...blah blah blah. No biggie. That would have been a pretty good find since that is one of the toughest Merc Varieties to locate. In fact, that was fcloud's last variety to find when he completed his Mercury Dime Complete Variety Set. Considering I am focused on MS...this is ok. I would have kept looking for the variety anyway. One day I will find it.
I did find one coin that was a real keeper. It was a 1940-S FS-901. Page 65 of the new Cherrypickers' Guide. Doubled Die Obverse and Doubled Die Reverse. I already have this coin in ANACS MS66 that I just cracked out. The MS66 example I have has the characteristic DIE CRACKS on the obverse and reverse which is cool. The example I just Cherrypicked was EARLY DIE STATE and it does not have the die cracks...but the example is only a RAW super-slider unfortunately. It lacks a bit of luster in some areas but seems to be an okay example. Not too bad for a $10 purchase. Pics Below.

I stopped by one dealer's table that ONLY HAD TONERS. I saw one Mercury Dime in his case and I asked to see it. It was stunning with an Orange/Yellow circle on each side. It was an NGC MS67* 1945. I was of course hoping to find that the coin would be the new 1945 DDO....wow, what a nice variety coin that would be. It was not. For grins, I asked what his price was for the coin. Mind you, a 1945 in MS67 will typically run about $40. His price was $500.
From the 3 hours that we were there, I would say that I accomplished all of my goals for the day. I had a great time and so did my kids. It is a very nice show and I can't wait for the next one. After checking every single Mercury Dime in the building for varieties we met up with MFH and headed out for lunch. That may have been the true highlight of the day. Mike is a great guy and he always has cool toys!

Greg,
Always a pleasure meeting you. I have already told of the
Barber experience on the Mega Thread.
Oddly enough, I didn't find one coin that would have fit
Sarasota. I am pleased you were able to find a couple !!
