1971 Topps Set I picked up in Charlotte....

Finally had a chance to go through this set today and all I can come up with is "WOW". I knew it was pretty nice as did the rest of the group when we were just flipping through the binder pages, but if you were going for NM then you could literally sub 3/4 to 5/6 of the entire set. I'll be subbing around 125 of these. I gave $1700 for the set. The dealer bought it 5 minutes before I came to his table (seller was still there getting rid of more stuff) and just flipped it for a little profit. The guy he bought it from told me his dad put it together in '71 and it hadn't seen daylight since. Here is a generous sampling of stars and high numbers

The Blyleven is miscut. It's the worst card in the set by far. Really the only card that needs replacing.

This is a very nice set. If the other cards look like this you have made a great purchase. It is very hard to find a raw set from 1971 that was well taken care of.

Nice job and keep us informed on how the grades come back.

Why say that?? You believe it is or are you just being a dink??
  • Looks like a great set !! Congrats !! Most of the cards shown i wouldn't call them nearmint. JMHO Maybe ex/mint. I could be wrong.
But hey as long as you are happy with them that's all that counts.
Good Luck with the sub when you send them in.

    Very nice set.
I'd put most of those in the 6-8 range.
Just flatten out a few of those corners before subbing.
    Nice set.

might be the scanner. I've subbed around 3000 cards in the last 3 years and have had like 4 of them come back EOT. They all look fine and measure up perfect in hand.
  • 19541954 Posts: 2,906 ✭✭✭
If this set came from a collector that put this together back in the 70's the odds that some are trimmed are pretty slim, however there is a good chance some are innocently colored. Not many submissions that PSA gets does not have an EOI these days.

  • He'll do fine with this set. Don't let people bring you down. As stated from another poster, expect 6's to 8's. If happy with graes like this you will do fine. I know the black border's are a killer because it shows the white to easy.

lol, nobody can bring me down on here. I just sold a '71 set in EX/MT to NM/MT for $4400 and this set is just as nice as that one except none are graded. The scans really don't do these black borders justice, they are really nice in hand.

    Great Cards.

Brings back my memories as the 71s were the cards I first collected as a 2nd grader. A classmate gave me several and I was hooked.

lol, I know. I didn't have the time to peruse and look at all the cards like I usually do before buying something. Also, my cash reserve was depleting fast after buying those wax boxes and autos and giving Mike $3000, lol. Glad I gambled a little though.

Very nice cards. Scans are always brutal on '71 cards and will maginify any miniscule flaw. I bet those look great in person. Sounds like a steal for that price.

Agree on the scans. To the naked eye they probably look really nice. Scans can be brutal at times.

I agree, scans on 71's don't do the cards any justice. $1700 for that set was a steal. Talk about being at the right place at the right time! Have you had a chance to check the low POP cards yet?

    351, 352, 398, 536 etc?

Scanned 71's always appear worse than they really are.

Set looks like what has been mentioned 6-8 maybe even a few 9's in there somewhere.

    Good luck.

    Good for you.

Let me look and see if those are part of the initial sub grouping. The '71 set is probably the set that I have the least amount of knowledge on as far as subbing, low pops, etc...simply because you don't come up on high grade '71 raw or unopened as much as you do the other 60's and '70's sets.

    Steve,
I hope there are a few 9's mixed in. Looking at VCP, 9's go for a chunk.

Speaking of scanning..... I wonder what an eBay style 'set break' on these would bring? I bet that people would go big on the high numbers alone, not even mentioning the stars.
  • Awesome for a raw set find, congrats!

  • I hope there are a few 9's in there for ya. That is a bad year for grading and hard to tell a grade from a scan. Alot of times the white is just extra card and not wear on the card, other times it's the opposite. At least you bought the set in person so if you have been submitting for years you should know what to expect.
So don't pay attention to the negative remarks. Ex coloured, trimmed etc... Anytime you come across a set that nice make the high last as long as you can !! It's like going to a casino and winning the jackpot !!

  • I was gonna pay $1,800 and I was right there while Tommy was looking it over.

It is a great set especially with the price. Like you said grade out the best 50-100 cards, then give it a flip!

  • I hope you do well. In fact i know you will at that price point. Psa is very tough on the black bordered beauties.
  • i was thumbing thru some old threads and found this one. I'm pretty familiar with this set amd have collected a few of them over the years. $1700 isn't as good a deal as you think. The break value is around $4300 so you bought it at around 40 percent. Add in your grading fees and selling expenses and you"ll be closer to 50. Problem is, most of these cards appear to be just 7's and a lot of them are 6's. 7's have dropped quite a bit the last few years and you can't give common 6's away.

You'll make a few hundred maybe with time, but it wasn't a slam dunk. And that's ok.....sometimes "just ok" deals are a-ok!!!! Have fun! image

First time seeing this thread. Scans are tough on black bordered cards.

Just judging by the the scans alone, I would say the set appears EX-MT too
with some NM cards in the mix. The centering on many appear off as well.
I'm sure some cards might appear sharper in person too.

Still it looks like a solid buy and money maker if you grade the right cards
    and break it up correctly.

I once broke up a '71 partial set by series on ebay, and even pulled out 10 cards
for grading. My set was a solid Ex-Mt too and ended up netting $2500. This was like
seven years ago. The market may have changed a lot on this set since then.
My set had nicer commons with the stars being slightly weaker overall. My Seaver got
a PSA 8, that was the best card in the set. The Aaron graded PSA 7. Munson was 10/90.
It was a fun and easy listing, watching the series auction off.

    Good luck with your buy.

My first time looking at this post. I noticed a few of the cards did not show a team logo on the players hats. Can someone explain?
I'm not that familiar with cards from this era.
