ANA Summer Seminar Lodging Question

For those who have attended in the past, would you recommend staying in the dorm or staying at one of the listed hotels? I plan on renting a car. Thanks!

If you're more concerned about meeting new people: dorms

If you're more concerned about luxury: hotel

The on campus apartments are nice for a college dorm (though no air condition). Everyone does congregate around there and it truly is the best part of the seminar. But indeed the campus housing isn't exactly "vacation-like". You'll be in for some late nights around the campus, just because of the people you'll meet, but if you'd rather make sure that you get a good night's rest, go for the hotel.

I'd strongly recommend staying at one of the local B&B's. It's a little more expensive, but well worth it.

  • The Antlers down the road is a Hilton. Very nice and not really pricey. You could walk it in the morning/afternoon if you wanted. Of course there are always other instructors/students who might give you a ride.

I wouldn't give up staying at the dorm for anything. The night life during the seminar is one of the coolest parts about the entire seminar and it's just plain convenient. Okay, you have to use a communal bathroom, but it's only for a week.

I have been four times - three times at Hilton and one north side of town.

You could stay at Hilton and not rent a car - may excellent restaurants within 5 minutes and can buy lunches as desired. It is an easy 20 minute walk.

    Me, I need air.

I'm rather finicky when it comes to getting a good night sleep and having nice accommodations and even though the campus dorm rooms are very rudimentary with no air conditioning and no private bath (which almost caused me to stay off in a hotel), as some have already mentioned, I would DEFINITELY recommend staying on campus. Although the programs are fantastic and you will learn more than you could ever want about numismatics, the "night life" at the courtyard "lounge" each evening is an even more rewarding experience. You will meet many numismatic like-minded people, wonderful musicians, some pretty mean poker players, some "big-wig" coin people - all while enjoying store-bought beverages of all kinds. I plan to attend again this year and wouldn't even dream of staying off campus!

I have done both. The luxury of the hotel is nice, but there is a clear loss of camaraderie by missing the evening beer fests. I have made many more connections when I stay on campus, than when I stayed at a hotel.

Just my two cents. I look forward to seeing you there.

  • Well, you'd want to stay in the newer dorms, called the "Western Ridge", which has suites and such. So much newer and nicer than the old Loomis dorms.
Dorm life means more time for "Lunar Lounge".
  • Thanks everyone for the advice. It's been a "few" (twenty) years since I stayed in a college dorm...may have to give it a try!

I stayed in the dorms the only time I was able to attend the seminar. The weather was so perfect that air conditioning was not a factor and the fresh air made me sleep soundly. Except my snoring drove my roommate to another location early on. image And the nightly congregation at the courtyard with the dark profile of Pikes Peak looming above us was priceless. image

Yes, they do. Remember though, at the local altitude of Colorado Springs and the typically low humidity of the area, the evenings are usually comfortably in the mid to upper 60's in July.

For a person who needs to chill at the end of the day and unwind like myself, staying off campus is essential for all parties. I have enough human contact during meals and class, and alone time is essential.

On an unrelated note, I have a difficult time with flights that have connections (I live in NJ). Has anyone taken a non-stop flight to Denver and taken a shuttle and/or rented a car? It's about 60 miles, but I did not know if this was an option for some of you. The less time I spend in an airport and in an airplane the better.

  • Halfcentman,

I too have a problem with flights in and out of Colorado Springs so I fly into Denver. Plenty of flights to choose from.

The problem is getting from Denver down to the Springs. I rent a car; but be advised that the taxes on the rental are way high. I do it just to have the luxury of my own transportation while I there. I like to drive through the Garden of the Gods after class sometimes.

    MJ,

I like the fact that the Hilton is quiet and has everything I'm used to in a hotel (like you I travel quite a bit). Not to mention the downtown area is one block away. Can you say Starbucks!

  • I found out that I could've booked through Denver for my way back, just jumping off the Denver Mint floor tour on Friday.
