Oil Painting St. Gaudens

I decided to take an oil painting class this academic quarter. I did a little painting back in high school but only in acrylic, so I was excited to start working with oil.
A recent assignment was to create a collage, then paint it (18x24 canvas). I created a numismatic themed collage with background space filled with Rockwell's "Four Freedoms." Today I tackled the St. Gaudens $20 portion of the collage. Total work time was about 2 and a half hours. I still need to finish the periphery of the obverse, which should take around another 45 mins. Colors used were a cad yellow, cad red, cobalt, ochre, mixing white, and a touch of raw umber. Diameter of the coin is around 11".

Looking at it now, the body is actually the correct size, but the head is a little too small. I'll need to fix that.

great strike, nice mint luster,
it looks definitely "proof" !!!
Very nice! I too have been painting with oil for a long time - more than 25 years. Try some Dutch Process or Chamber Process white lead in oil for a stiffer texture (the smaller producers...Doak, Old Holland etc.). These modern paints are so darn buttery with all the filler and extenders and driers/retardants. Did you stretch your own canvas and prime it? Really well done!
Best wishes,
ERic

Bought a pre-stretched triple primed canvas, but added a layer of gesso myself.
Careful there, oil over acrylic is not very permanent. Oil paint becomes increasingly brittle as it continues to dry, but acrylic primers remain flexible - so eventually, there may be adhesion problems, especially if unstretched, rolled etc. It's a variant of the "fat over lean" rule I suppose. Nice work there!
Best wishes,
Eric
Edited to add: On a rigid support, oil over acrylic primer or "sizing" is said to be permanent, but I still prefer white lead, ground so stiff there is no need for glue size, on walnut panels or copper.

Is this the Lindsay Lohan version or what?
The name is LEE!
Not to hijack the thread, but I wonder how many here are familiar with the other art works of St. Gaudens? Here is a link to of one of his sculptures ("Victory") that reminds me of the $20 gold piece every time I see it.
I knew it would happen.
