OK, say you had a choice between a PCGS coin...

ajmanajman Posts: 1,359 ✭✭✭
that has no CAC sticker and an NGC coin that has a CAC sticker. Both coins are original skin and eye-appealing for the grade with no problems. Also you don't know if the PCGS coin has been submitted or not, which one would you buy, not just as a collector but (gulp! as an investor) also as a possible sale well into the future? For the sake of discussion let's say that there is no dealer submission center close by that could send it in for you, and obviously CAC is not accepting collector memberships right now anyway. Which coin do you choose? In other words, does the PCGS coin still trump the CAC'ed NGC coin?

Really depends on the two coins in hand via a side by side comparison.

    perhaps you meant

pretend that the same coin is in a

    PCGS
    NGC/CAC

    holder of same grade?

then I would choose the NGC coin.

I agree and just for the record I do not own any CAC coin but would if the opportunity came up. I feel that most of my collection is eye-appealing and if some were submitted to the green bean factory they would have their blessing. I also own an equal amount of PCGS and NGC coins.

I'm trying to decide between two coins I have found that I like, one is a PCGS coin with no sticker and the other is stickered from ATS. I was just wondering aloud which one I should buy. It looks as if I will need to keep studying the two to determine which one I like better eye-appeal wise.

I'd look at the coins and choose the one I like best.

I like this answer and the one you got first

    << <i>The one I like more. >>

We don't know what your intentions are with this coin is.

    1. If this is for your personal collection and intend to keep it for the long term... I would go with

    << <i>The one I like more. >>

    2. If you are considering resale value (And really, who doesn't), then the CAC sticker (As I understand it) is a plus... Assuming the coins "Look" very similar and they are the same grade.

    Just my worthless two cents.

One of the problems that I frequently run into is that one coin's photos are much better than the others, so it makes it more difficult to choose between the two.

All things being equal (and they rarely/ever are), I would take the NGC/CAC coin over the PCGS coin.

If all things being equal, I would chose the NGC with CAC.

If I was given the option of having the SAME COIN in either the PCGS holder or the NGC/CAC holder, I would choose the former.

    The OP has said the coins are similar;
Both coins are original skin and eye-appealing for the grade with no problems. Also you don't know if the PCGS coin has been submitted or not,
Even if the price of the PCGS coin is equal to the NGC CAC coin, the PCGS coin stands to CAC and would be worth more.

Similar to RYK, if it was the same coin, but the options were NGC/CAC or PCGS then I would choose the coin in a PCGS holder. The reason is simple; my clients prefer PCGS graded coins and above a certain price level would also like a CAC sticker on the coin. Additionally, it is less expensive to submit a coin to CAC than to PCGS as a crossover and the results are in-hand more quickly, too. Therefore, if I need to increase the price or liquidity of the coin to make my clients happy, it is far easier for me to purchase a PCGS graded coin and ship it to CAC than to purchase an NGC/CAC graded coin and cross it to PCGS followed by submission to CAC.

Same here. The plastic of an NGC holder is more likely to scuff such that I can't repolish it, while I can get a scuffed PCGS holder looking nice again. The NGC holders also don't fit in my boxes.

Let me be more clear, two different coins, same grade, date and mm and similar in eye appeal. The rest of the op is what I stated. Just wanted to know what others thought of a PCGS coin vs. a NGC/CAC coin. I apologize for any confusion.

It depends on the series and the value. If i agree with the grade, probably the NGC/CAC. If im unsure, probably the PCGS (since it may not have been to CAC).

Frequently used interchangeably with PCGS graded/holdered coin and NGC graded/holdered coin.

Scratches on PCGS holders are more easily removed with plastic polish. Not so with NGC, especially their scratch-resistant holders.

I'd rather have the same coin at the same grade in PCGS plastic than NGC/CAC. Easy enough to add a CAC sticker to it, if that's important to you.

This. But if it were the same coin and the question was to choose the better holder combination, I would probably just go with PCGS.

PlastX, a rag, and elbow grease. Older NGC holders have plastic that never looks good, and newer ones are polish-resistant once they scratch.

There are lots of NGC/CAC coins out there that PCGS will not grade at all, and certainly PCGS will not cross at the same grade. I would buy the PCGS coin first, without any reservations. The market supports my choice. I see no reason to talk about all the "exceptions" for NGC coins looking better than the PCGS coins.

Sight unseen? The NGC CAC coin.

Buying with each coin in hand? Would be case by case.
