If you were going to a major coin show

like the Whitman show in Baltimore in about 4 weeks but only had a budget of $6K for the show what would you be looking to buy in the realm of pre 1933 coins?

I phrased it that way because there will be coins there priced at 100X my budget and there are some here that buy those kinds of coinsimage

IF.............nice type coins.............however if would never have that type of money to spend. I went to my first ANA in Boston a couple of years ago and other than my "trade bait" I only had 1K to spend.

In all seriousness (is that a word?) if I had that kind of cash I would look to pick up an eye-appealing example each of Charlotte and Dahlonega gold. Your preferences may vary.

I would pick up some early Drape Bust Dimes 1796-1803 or a nice 1822 and some other dimes.

6K would be fun to play with!image

Well it depends on what you collect. If type in general, I'd say a PQ bust half or a nice classic head large cent.
All coins kept in bank vaults.

I'm all over the place with my collecting. I have a couple AU Bust Halves already some Liberty Head Double Eagles, Saints, Morgans etc. I'm thinking hard about at least one nice Seated Half and maybe and really nice IHC. Standing Liberty Quarters are interesting too. I'm leaving for the Penguins game in Pittsburgh right now (wife is yelling at me to come on right now) I'll check this thread when I get home tonight.

As always, I would be looking for those coins that 'capture' me with the beauty of their design and condition. I move between series (i.e. WLH's, CC Morgans, IHC's, Mercs, Buffs etc) and do not restrict myself to one particular type. Cheers, RickO
  • Hmm here's what I would do:

    1. An exceptionally well-struck 1921 Peace, MS-65: ~$2000
    2. An 1854-S Gold $1, AU-55: ~$1400
    3. An 1875-CC Twenty Cent piece, MS 60: ~$1800
    4. 1864 2C, MS-63 RB, ~$200
    5. 1865 3CN, MS-63: ~$175
    6. Test my fledgling grading skills by getting 2 $100 raw coins and having them graded onsite
    7. A $75-100 ancient coin I know nothing about while enjoying an amazing story from a knowledgeable dealer about the historical significance of it.
    8. A $15 book
    9. Happy with my purchases, I'd use the handful of dollars I have left to go to the nearest McDonald's and buy a double quarter pounder with cheese meal, large sized, with a Dr. Pepper, some Hot Mustard Sauce to dip the fries in, and - since I'm on vacation and going all out- a hot apple pie.

I would not be looking for anything in particular. I'd be looking at everything and considering my options.

  • 6k would be a dream,
These are coins I have always wanted:
    1. 1876 20 cent in AU
    2. 1853-O A&R Half & quarter in AU
    3. A CC gold coin
    4. An upgrade to my 1875-CC 20 cent, in AU of course
    5. Any CC Seated Dollar in F or above should about finish off the 6K

"I would not be looking for anything in particular. I'd be looking at everything and considering my options. "

This. And, what I would focus on is the kinds of coins that are disappearing from today's marketplace, not stuff that can be obtained from dozens of dealers.

  • Hi,

Listen to Andy. And don't limit yourself before you even see the offerings! Have fun too! I only collect 37-42 Pr so, easy for me - but I'd still look wide.

    Best wishes,

Depending upon the day(s) that you attend, a budget of approximately $6k would likely be more than most other collector-attendees. The answers you receive will be heavily influenced by what others collect or sell, so keep that in mind. I will be at the show for several days and the money I spend will be within the superb type and early Federal issue niche areas, which is where I tend to concentrate my dealings.

I completely agree. With the recent disgorgement of two huge gold collections, there might be some around for a little while. Make sure you buy original surface examples in, of course, PCGS holders. image

Totally agree with Andy -- when something really nice and/or unusual appears, you want to be able to
snap it up. Focusing on something specific, unless you are a collector looking for a special date or variety
to add to your collection, may keep you from encountering the cool stuff.

I did this exact scenario in 2004 or 2005...went to my first Baltimore show (which was also my first major show) with $6K to spend.

IIRC, I bought a 1955 Doubled Die Obverse Lincoln Cent in MS64BN and a 1864 Small Motto Two Cent Piece in 63 or 64 BN.

If I could go back in time, I'd buy the same 55 DDO or try to find a 64 RB...or I'd buy the nicest Fugio I could find.

When you save up a nice sum of money like this, I always think it's better to buy one or two hard to get coins rather than several relatively inexpensive coins.

One of the problems with going to a show with a full wallet and high expectations is that you tend to buy the wrong stuff because you feel the money burning a hole in your pocket. My advice would be to leave the money home and go with the intention of looking at a lot of coins and making 6 new coin contacts. If there is something you really need to buy, you cold probably hold it with a handshake or even a credit card. The experience will be much better if you are not pressured to blow your war chest.

If I had that for the FUN show I would have tried for this.
There are only 5 1958 Jefferson nickel DCAMs in PCGS holders (2 in 67, 3 in 68). PCGS price guide is now $5500.00,
it was about half of that.

I actually thought I had a chance of getting this one.
It went for much more than I expected it to. PCGS price guide now is $5000.00, it was also about half of that.

What will happen the next time similar coins come up? I don't know, but hopefully the guys with lots of money aren't
looking then. I did get this one. So I guess I can't complain.

I will tell you what not to do, dabble in moderns or ultra high grades unless you are already a player in that market and know exactly what to look for. I agree with the members who say type gold coins with a multilayer original skinned in a PCGS holder (points added for OGH) in conservatively graded XF 40 from the southern mints.

State Quarters (Raw), I think they are going to make a comback. (Snicker)...

Seriously, I would be looking for either a few nice error coins or a few type coins. There are to many holes in my collection to be more specific than that without doing some serious research.

For some reason, I just can't resist 55 DDO Lincolns. I think they are awesome.

This probably comes from all those years wishing I had one when I was a kid.

Buy some XF/AU REDBOOK varieties of Capped Bust Half Dollars, preferably 1807-24. Certainly concentrate on PCGS holdered Busties.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

    RYK has it.

The thing about coins is, you have to buy when the good ones show up, which is not necessarily the same time that you have the money to pay for them image

So don't feel like you have spend 6K just because you have it.
  • Thanks for the great advice all. I like the approach of not letting the money burn a hole in my pocket. I really don't have a problem with that and have enough self control to not buy for the sake of buying. I've went to shows before with $3K + and not spent a dime other than gas, eats and admission.

    Tom B.
I will be there for the early buyers session on Thursday at opening.
  • At only $6K that's going to be tough. I generally only attend large shows if I have in excess of $250K to spend, although sometimes I will make an exception.

I'm going to make this simple and quick.Almost knowing, the market in coins nowadays, the key dates and denominations will probably not move much.I would take my 6000 and put it all to Silver!I have the itch, that Silver is going up once again.Just my hunch.Like so many times,I can be wrong.image

I'll predict the only portion of the 6k spent will be on fast food tolls and gas. Been there done that. Look through the auction catalog and consider buying that way.
