When you scan a dealer's case for stuff at a show and he has a stack of 5 or 6 of the same date/mm do you ask to look thru the stack or just fuhgeddaboutit?
It's sad to because I don't know who is wrong in this case. Me for not asking to look or the dealer for stacking his material. I will say if I think there might be something I Really Want and if He's Not Busy I would maybe ask but not usually.
If its a date and mintmark you are looking for than sure!
One dealer at a recent show I was at had a stack (4) of a particular date/mintmark i was lookong for. i Took the stack of 4 coin and bought 2 making it easier for all the rest of the people not wanting to look to closely
Having assisted a dealer for 18 months, I can see how to set up a table - and if I have multiples of a specific date and mint mark, I would put the better one on top.
Most people ask what is under the top coin, and then answer their own question. Never fails.

Definitely -- just as an example, I looked through a pile of 1887-O Morgan dollars a few weeks ago, and pulled out an unattributed VAM-5 in a slab. No idea how many collectors passed on this coin due to the stacking -- it was 2nd to the bottom, and was not the nicest coin in the stack (not even close).

If there is something you are looking for, I suggest you ask. I have a corner table or 2 straight tables at every show I do, and I have several coins that are stacked, usually all are the same date and mintmark with the best one visible. I would not be able to manage 5 or 6 tables to display every coin without any stacks.

<< <i>There's only so much space in a display case. What do you expect a dealer to do with his coins once the case is full? >>
Duh!! Stack em or wait till space opens up. I was asking largely from the standpoint of looking for doilies or other collectible slabs which are easy to spot. If you are looking for a certain holder would you ask to look through the stack if there wasn't one on top?
If I am looking for a specific coin I ask to see all they have with them, I could care less if they are stacked, in a box in the back, in their safe or even their pocket. They're are there to sell and I to buy.

If I was looking for something specific, then yes- I'd look. How else would one find what they're looking for if they're not willing to actually look? >>
You would probably save time by just asking the dealer if he/she has . . . . . . The dealer should know his/her inventory and be able to give a quick answer to your question.

A lot of dealers still don't know squat about doilies and related double holders. If I don't see any in his 3 cases, when he is busy I don't bother to ask to look thru his short stack of 85-O Morgans. I was just wondering if people here do it routinely or just when they are looking for something specific.

<< <i>Yes I do. I also ask if they are all the same date and MM. Sometimes they are and sometimes thay aren't. >>
Same here.
