    How unusal is finding a 1950 $5 bill in change. It happened today for me. A very nice one too.

    Paper money wears out much faster than coins so you can expect a lot will be shredded and incinerated. Also, newer notes with better anti-counterfeiting safeguards are replacing the older currency without these safeguards and these older obsolete notes need to be destroyed.

    I think they would love to get rid of cash and make it all electronic. But that would be a big and unpopular undertaking and I wouldn't think its in the near future.
