Peru is suing the Spanish government for the Odyssey treasure
<< <i>The funny part of the whole senario is why is Spain entitled to recover silver from the wreck when the silver Spain claims to own was plundered from South/Central America! Wonder if any of those countries will have the lightbulb in their head go off and sue Spain for what they have a stronger claim to IMHO! Is Pandora's Box going to open??? >>
A few days ago I commented that the Spanish government does not deserve the treasure because they stole it from the Indians. Now Peru is suing the Spanish government.
GOOD! I'm usually not a fan of lawyers, but it this case I hope the lawyers and Peru get the whole half billion and the Spanish gets nothing but a pile of legal bills. It will be cold day in hell before I travel to Spain. They don't deserve my tourist money
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Wonder what their defense will be? We plundered it fair and square using conquered native peoples as slaves to mine it and smelter it?
They may seek reparations going back to the Mayan and Aztec cultures
Go Peru, kick some Spanish/evilEuropean backside.
Of course the powers that be in Peru probably are descendents of the Conquistadors from Spain/Europe who invaded and enslaved the indigenous population of Peru.
In the event that Peru wins its lawsuit against Spain, indigenous Peruvians whose blood is pure and not fouled by European blood can then sue Peru to recover waht is rightfully theirs.

That's exactly what I'd like to see in the court papers. I'd like to see how Spain could remotely think that they had a winning legal argument.
How many centuries in the past can a claim be made? Spain will have to say that a claim is good for 400 years or so. And Peru can then argue that such a claim is surely valid for at least 500 years! I love it! If this case goes anywhere, it'd be lots of fun to see how many centuries back the statute of limitations can be pushed in order to make a claim of injustice.
The Vikings are gonna have alot to answer for, by the time this is over. And the Moroccans, too. And I believe that one of my ancestors was unfairly killed somewhere in Southern France about 25,000 years ago in a dispute over cave rights.
I knew it would happen.
In a recent addition of California Lawyer [a magazine published by the State Bar of Cal.] there is an article concerning a legal dispute in So. America involving the oil company [Chevron?] that is the successor to Texaco being sued for damages arising from Texaco's business operations in So. America and environmental contamination resulting therefrom. For various reasons the lawsuit ended up being filed and tried in a So. American court. The oil company lost the case and a multi billion dollar [or So. American dollar equivalent] was filed against the oil company. Appeals took place in the So. American courts and the company still lost. The case is to the point where the winning Plaintiffs and their lawyers want to start enforcing the judgment. Of course the company has no assets, income or business operations in the country where the lawsuit was filed and the judgment issued. So the lawyers want to take the So. American judgment and commence enforcement proceedings on that judgment in other countries [including the USA] where the oil company has assets, income and business operations. Attorneys from all over the world [including many from the USA] are involved in the case on both sides. International law, statutes and treaties have to be studied, and out of country lawyers were required to learn about the court system in the country where the case was filed and tried. Also local judges and the local court systems had to be studied to determine how So. American justice systems work.
Very interesting indeed.
<< <i>The legal fees on this case will probably exceed the value of the treasure. >>

Count me in, you can send your gold and silver treasures to me ASAP. I will then exempt you from any lawsuit I might file for reparations for the wrongs my ancestors suffered through beginning in 1492.
