Back-of-the-Magazine Ads for Coins – Popular Mechanics 1949

There were several columns wanting to buy/sell stamps, less than one column for coins.

Hope your dad/granpa chose the road less travelled (coins), and that you found this as interesting as did I…

Old coin ads are always interesting.
I imagine what if we could go back in time and buy something. I'd need to bring some junk coins from that time-frame to spend but since we know the prices today we would know what to buy.

It is always interesting to see such old ads... even the old menu's from diners of the 40's and 50's are amazing. How prices have changed. Cheers, RickO

I did millions of dollars in business from the free classified ads in the back of Numismatic News. Millions. Added the $5 option to extend the ad for a month and at times I had 10 ads running in addition to my paid ads which for some weird reason my display ads returned zero.

When I retired sorta in 2000 and moved overseas, within 90 days I had letters from people who missed seeing my ads. When I returned in 03 it wasn't long afterwards that numis news terminated the ads. It's a shame what's happened to that coin newspaper.

I even bought a domain name to set up a whole new coin classifieds website and even took the pulse of the collectors who frequent this forum and the percentages who wanted to see it was high. There's so many opportunities to be a part of this business and make a living in my opinion. Time however is a consideration .

I really enjoy those old ads. I have been looking thru my old issues of "The Numismatic from the 1980's and even rereading some of the article or reading for the first time and I can relate to the stories in there, today. And I might even know how the story has really developed and ended.
