I'm in the process of buying a substantial hoard of Victoria type in 5 cents , 10 cents, 25 cents and 50 cents including key dates and varieties. I look upon it as a way of broadening my numismatic horizon. I'll post some pics of the premier pieces when they are in hand. The piece that has left a lasting impression is a high grade circ. 1899 quarter dollar with spectacular toning.
My pleasure Bob. There are many fun things to look at and buy in Canada...U.S prices have gone up so much that the average collector is almost always left on the sidelines.
There is a really good company in Canada that I always deal with they are called the Canadian Numismatic Company they have it all the rarest to the most common dates at fair prices. The host the largest auctions in Canada : The RCNA and the Torex shows. Here is there link.
Marc and Eric. They also offer up and close pictures if you call them up. Yeah the 1916-C sovereign is a nice coin but has a bad reputation amongst collectors.
I also wondered why and then learned that most think there is a hoard some where...either in a bank across seas or some where else. The coin has been going down in value for a long while now. I think it list's at 30 000$ in MS-62 compared to a year ago at 35 000$. I love the coin but I stay away from it. They are rare in MS-64 and above. They use to think that less than 10 existed but know some say more than 50 are known.
Once went to a place in Pickering 'twas fun buyin' coins with no bickering the folks were quite friendly the flea market, quaint... Up north where my friend's prob'ly snickering. Eh ?
I grew up in Ohio, where Canadian coins were commonly found in the 1950's and 1960's. I began sets of George VI and Elizabeth II cents, dimes, quarters, and dollars, and bought most of them in BU condition. I even bought some of the more common prooflike sets and the first few individual cased silver dollars when they were issued inthe 1970s. My interest waned when Canada switched to a nickel compositin in 1968, and declined further with the proliferation of commemorative issues in later years. I would still buy some of the older coins (1930's-1950's) if I could find slabbed examples that were reasonably priced.

I like the Canadian $10 gold coins from the early 1900s. Very cool.

What do you call "rare"? i do have a complete date set of quarters including the 1875. i collect the halves but have not added to that set in years-too hard to find even decent goods at reasonable cost. I have a 1932 half which is probably my rarest Canadian half and Also as I mentioned earlier a 1948 Silver dollar. I think I have a complete set of 5 cent silvers excluding the 1921-I haven't looked at this set in years-i need to get to the bank more often.
Matrix1980, some folks might want to send you private messages but you need to turn on your PM function to receive them. I see your thread got moved here; it was bound to happen. Anyway, glad to have another Canadian enthusiast here.
just check out Dr. J. Haxby he just published a book through whitmann publishing. then there is Rob Turner with his books about Canadian Cents 1858 and younger and there is the Canadian forum canadiancoppercoins.com.. it is not only about cents..... members are always welcome with new contributions and posts.
personally, I am always searching for Canadian Varieties, mainly Queen Victoria types. and yes, I do have a 1921 5 cent piece....
do not wish to say much about these guys (CNC...and auctions etc..) BUT before you buy, perhaps it would be wise to check with other Canadian collectors... and perhaps consult with other canadian forums....where high end collectors frequently contribute. placing big ads and charging high prices is not always a sign of an exdcfellent reputation.... I shall leave it at that. There will also be a new auctioneer (Geoffery Bell) very soon, with an excellent reputation. it appears that the top elite is moving that way. above is just an observation from comments in Forums.

Your best bet is to buy The Charlton Standard guide for Canadian coins (from 2012 they list all mintages plus a lot more):

You would probably like the Canadian gold sovereigns even more. The key dates been 1908-C (636 minted) and 1916-C (about 50 or so known to exist).

I have sold/traded two 1913-C sovereigns in the last year, both MS63, as well as 1911-C (several), 1914-C, 1917-C, 1918-C, 1919-C.
