Grade Opinion - 1814 Bust Dime! (Grade Posted)

Can I get the boards opinion on the grade of this 1814 JR-3?
(Bear in mind that this date comes with generally weaker strike details)
The first set of pics are of the actual color (coin is dark), but I lightened them up in the second set to
show the details a little better (I think). There is some underlying luster (I think).
Also, this coin was a PITA to shoot!

Due to the weak strike and missing lower wingtip due to strike, I give it a shot at AU50. But then that's only my guess.

  • Very nice looking coin. Is it in an NGC holder? Are you sending it to PCGS?

At least a 45. AU would depend on luster, right? That's hard to assess from the photos.

Interesting coin. I will go with PCGS 40 for grade.

I'm going with VF-35, possibly a 40 on a good day. Although the 1814 is known for a week strike, I think there is a little to much rub on the hairline to make it anything above a 40. This is just my opinion so it should grade much higher. Good luck

    PS nice coin!!!

Interesting coin. I have seen coins like that grade anywhere from XF-45 to AU-58. I think NGC is more generous on these types of coins than our hosts. I think PCGS would call it an XF-45.

Although a totally different series, I recently saw a 1937-D 3 Leg Buffalo Nickel with more wear than this coin in an NGC AU-58 holder. It was painfully overgraded.

I gave it a 45 for the areas that are still quite sharp, and the overall appearance image

Put me down for 45. That's a sharpie (and I don't mean a permanent marker or a Chinese dog).

Say, Stoney, on another topic- did you ever start with your "Paperclip" project? Mine has gotten almost up to your declared $100 starting line, so you'd better get busy if you haven't already!image

Maybe by the end of the second month I'll have made up the gap caused by me starting at $1 instead of $100, and will be right there with you.

LMC, for the life of me I haven't started. Honestly though, I'm swamped with University work, and the only sections I search on eBay are Bust Dimes (with few exceptions).

So the Bust Dime's I look at are the ones I want and end up keeping. Don't worry, I'll eventually find something!

Thanks for all the feedback everyone on this coin.

It is currently in an NGC-45 holder which I paid just under EF-40 money for about a year ago.
The reason for this thread was to see what the consensus thought this coin might grade, and to
compare it to what PCGS says after I send it in (sometime in the next couple months).

I was in the weak EF-40 grade range. EF-45 could be the grade on a very good day, but VF-35
wouldn't surprise me either. Nevertheless I'm happy with the piece image

That one hasn't been cleaned, that's for sure! image

I do not know the series well so take my comments with a grain of salt...as you would with anyone's. I would say the obverse is a 35+ (or since you say it is known for a weak strike maybe that translates into a 40?). I would call the reverse a 45. Combining the two, I would guess 40. Good luck and be sure to let us know!

A better reverse shouldn't raise the grade of a lower obverse.

It just might go into an AU holder if anyone can see the luster in THE DARK.
I was the second person to vote EF45 in this poll (feels good to see the results)
