1834 Bust Quarter ... kinda crusty, kinda kewl ... rotation opinions

editted to add please look at Eagleguy's B-2 partway down and notice the rotation of the reverse is the same for my B-1. Love to hear thoughts from the Bust Quarter guys!

This one has been sitting on my desk for a couple weeks, my last NEWP. Tomorrow morning it joins the girls at the SDB hotel, so, I figured I better get a picture of her first.

Not the best picture, but a really nice wholesome coin IMO, and properly graded (again IMO) graded by our hosts.

This is a B-1, Die State III according to my Browning reference. The rotatation of the reverse in the picture is on purpose, as I used a straight coin flip on the photo (i.e. the reverse is rotated about 40deg CW)

  • I like them type of quarters and they are not overly priced yet. I would like to try to put together a whole set just like the one you have. Great looking coin.
  • No problems, lotsa crust. Very sweet coin!

You know you're startin' to get up into the better circ grades when you can see the eagle's facial expression.

This one looks a bit confused. Maybe he's trying to peck his way out of his plastic coffin, haha.

Nice coin. Out of curiosity, what's the piece of currency underneath, that you've used as a backdrop?

Very nice quarter! The new holder doesn't look bad either. I have noticed that this date tends to have some kind of rotation. Perhaps one of our estimed subject matter experts can comment on that?

    Here's mine, a B-2:

Rob ... regarding the backdrop, it's a catalog cover with a reduced picture of a lowwer plate of nine 5c Fractionals. Now, can you gues the catalog?? Here's a hint, it's the back cover.

Eagleguy ... nice quarter! Interesting that yours appears to have exactly the same rotation, and that it is a different reverse die. I'll hope this thread gathers some legs for that explaination.

  • The 1834 B-1 seems to always have a strong rotation on the reverse in relation to the obverse. The B-2 usually a slighter rotation. I have not done measuring of any kind, but every B-2 I have seen is rotated just like Eagleguy's. I'm assuming it's less rotated then the B-1 as it's mentioned in Steve Tompkins book, but they look very similar to me. It would be nice if someone could do an overlay and look at it first hand.
