A trio of crusty early Walkers...

ElmerFusterpuckElmerFusterpuck Posts: 4,780 ✭✭✭✭✭
The pre-1934 Walkers are always a challenge to find in nice circulated (VF-XF) condition. Seems like the 1917 is the easiest, then it goes down from there. For the Walker fanatics, what have been your most challenging dates? Anyone have a complete run of nice problem-free 1916-33 Walkers. I figure Walkerfan21D would be high on the list! image

I like those a lot! I have a few from lightly to well circulated from that era.

    Nice coins!
The 16D and 18D even look to be slightly undergraded (which I'd always rather have, instead of over graded).
I've noticed this with other PCGS walkers as well; it seems they are loose down at the VF20 level, then get real tough at the XF40 level,
but I don't know why. I need to discuss this with Supertooth sometime....

There are a lot of 'conditional' tough coins in the early to mid part of the series. In VF/XF there are no real stoppers. AU is where the real challenge is. But you have situations like the 21S - relatively common in VF with a partial breast plate, but exceedingly tough in true XF. The 21D is tough at all grades levels above VG, so that is a challenge, and the 21P is right behind it. The 20D, 23S, and 28S are not hard in VF, get tougher in XF, and are practically non existant in AU. Then there are coins like the 16S and 17S obv....I find these coins to be tougher in Fine and VF than they are XF. The 19D is the only other coin I find to be challenging at the VF/XF level, but it's not a stopper. Coins that are relatively easy despite low mintages are the 17D Rev, and 29D and S.

  • Maybe it's because I remember handling them as a kid, but I love circulated Walkers and those are nice.

Lot of nice ones to look at here. I particularly like the OP 18-D. Seems undergraded, but regardless it's a nice example.image

Terrific coins. These early date WLHs in mid-grade, circulated condition with good surfaces are far tougher to find than most realize. The 18-D is especially cool from this trio.

Oh yeah. Those are awesome. I love the wholesome look of a nice grey-toned circ silver coin.

Walkers are one of the few coins that retains all of it's magnificence as it wears down to a basal state.

    Terrific coins you have there!

The 18-D is often flatly struck- I tend to see this one as a 40

Very nice Walkers. Funny just the other day I was wondering how hard it would be to do the whole Walker series in 40-45. Even the late dates.

That would be a cool set and more affordable than unc or AU.
  • The 16-D is AWESOME!
  • amazing coins, later in life my next major collecting goal will most likely be WLH's if I am not priced out of the market.

I think this is a great thread!! I love seeing those original, problem free early Walkers! They are my FAVORITE!

  • Some old early Walkers. Some appear to be cleaned but I bought most of these in the late 60's. That's what we ran into back then.
The two loose ones are just showing trying to fill the empty holes from back then.

Edited to add: Sorry posted an 23-S instead of the 17-S I needed to post.

Wow, some really cool Walkers in this thread!!! I regret not jumping on a nice 16-S sometime back, those seem to be tough too.
  • Hello Folks---It's always nice to talk about Walkers. I liked them as a young kid and I still like them now that I have turned 65.

In all these years, I agree with "oreville" about how the Walkers age. I can get excited over a nice good--very good "early" Walker just as I can enjoy an MS coin from the later years. I guess that's why I have so many sets from various grading levels.

But today, DIMEMAN"S comment about a set of XF 40--45 coins sort of made me smile. Among ALL my raw sets, I guess that if I were to combine the coins, I could come up with a pretty good XF set. But, and it's a BIG BUT, there would still be a coin or two missing. The 21D coin comes to my mind. But, I wanted to note, that, if you want unmolested coins----if you want uncleaned----and, especially if you want undipped and original toned coins---A set of XF coins is even harder to acquire. Worse yet in original AU condition.

As to the scarcity of the "early" Walkers, I'll stick to my comments that I have made on both this forum and across the street. And, I'll agree with those top 15 coins that both Walker21D and myself have mentioned many times. However, recently, I note that these coins are getting ever more difficult to find. A lot of collectors seem to LOVE the Walker design----as well they should. Bob [supertooth]
