Is it hard to find a Circulated Peace Dollar that looks nice

I am working on a circulated type set and find that the Peace Dollar is the hardest coin for me to find that has a nice appearance. Maybe it is me, because I don't think they look that good in lower uncirculated grades either. Is there another series that you think is tough to find that looks presentable in circulated grades.

You are talking about personal perception.... and to quote the old phrase.."Beauty is in the eye of the beholder"... some like 'as struck' coins, some like tarnish, some like wear of a certain grade and only that grade. Good luck, Cheers, RickO

Many circ Peace Dollars can appear dull, and with their open design, rim bruises tend to be real noticeable. But you can find nice AUs if you look enough; I'd get a date other than 23-24-25-26, just for variety from the usual.

I have a circ '21 on the way from a board member, anxiously awaiting and it hasn't even left Pennsylvania yet. I am dying waiting for it. My first '21 Peace, I have hundreds of silver dollars back to 1799 and have never owned a '21 Peace.

I agree. This one has been lightly cleaned, unfortunately.

That VF Peace dollar looks nice. I like the even look without any distracting marks. I was hoping for a nice AU coin.

To me, Walkers do not look nice VF and below.

There are plenty of ugly ducklings in the circulated Peace Dollar world for sure, but you should also be able to find some very nice examples.

I've posted this one before, but the look of the VF coin above reminded me of it:

You should also be able to pick up some nice lightly circulated or even BU pieces from the common Philly issues 1922, 1923, and 1925. This is one I got this week from a pawn shop at just slightly over melt value. I don't think it's too ugly, especially at less than $30.

I found this 1928-S last week at a shop here in town... I think it's a pretty nice AU58.

  • I think I prefer circulated Peace dollars over uncirculated.

That low relief reverse just does not look nice in high grades.

    I agree.
The peace dollar design in general never was a favorite of mine... that and the commonly weak strike is a double negataive.
I have a nice looking 21 in my type set.

I was going to say the same thing.. I actually like the look of an evenly worn '21 Peace dollar more than a MS63.

  • I looked around and on Ebay alone I see several nice circulated Peace dollars even in PCGS holders. Not sure where the OP is looking, but several are available there. That being said your coin does look like a nice coin.

I don't mind the look of circulated Peace dollars.

Saints, especially high reliefs, do not look good in circulated grades. I'm not a huge fan of circulated Franklin halves either.
