How many times do you estimate you have been bodybagged or returned genuine from submissions to TPG'

  • Just got two nicely toned 1880 s's returned, not as AT, but cose 92 thought I had a shot at MS63-64! At least now you can see pics, check out certa 24483751 & 24483750, if they were cleaned it was a long time ago. I thought I had a couple old time album scores. Especially considering how I got them, but alas they are genuine so the acquisition story doesn't matter anymore!

On the average... 2 ~ 3 out of every 10 submissions. image

to answer why I would submit commons, they were the best 2 of 5 I got at $20.00 per was afraid of AT, not cleaned! But figured if I got 63 or 64, possible 65 I paid for all! Now ...well at least I didn't screw who I got them from, could've gotten close to face, but too honest. Figured I'd pay what B&M pays for common and Be ok either way (remember 5 coins 2 graded).

Probably around 20 to 30 as well. Much of it was copper that PCGS felt had environmental damage.
All coins kept in bank vaults.

Just once (though I submit rarely.) It was a 1909 Indian cent in gemmy red that Rare Coins of NH submitted for me -- Warren Mills thought it should 65 red (this was submitted before PCGS changed their copper guarantee.) Well, someone at PCGS bagged it for questionable color -- uh-uh. Sent it back in immediately; it came back 64red this time. Probably should be in a 65 red holder, or perhaps nowadays it could be a 64+, but for the moment I'm done submitting it. It's a nice coin I've had since purchasing it in high school at a local coin shop now long gone, about 1990 or so.
  • About 20%. I've been told that's better than average.

Zero (out of 17 submissions of raw 19th-century U.S. coins to PCGS). However, I won't send in raw coins with colorful toning. I also have a friend, who is a dealer, look at every coin to be sent in (in case I missed something).

Ten to 15. Some were sent in knowing they would Genuine, as they are better off in a genuine holder than a raw holder.

NGC/ANACS/ICG/SEGS Crossovers did not meet at grade many many times, which means "body bagged" to me, hundreds not accepted for crossover at other grading services grades. I learned my lesson, I do not submit raw coins any longer, at least in the past twenty years, so I have no "Genuine" coins. Ten years ago I decided not to buy raw coins in any series, saved me a lot of grief. If you want your coins in PCGS holders, buy them in PCGS holders. If you like to gamble, go to Las Vegas.

I enjoy the PCGS Registry Set program. The NGC Registry Set program is nicely run, but the coins in the sets, that are in NGC holders, are often with inflated grades, certainly grades with which PCGS would not agree.

Mind you, this is my opinion, and may only pertain to the Bust Series coins. PM me if you disagree on what I have said about the Bust Series grading, or if you agree on the Bust Series grading. I would like to hear from you.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

Not a lot of bodybags. A lot of genuine holders. This is primarily due to having pre-33 gold that , despite issues, seemed worth the authentication service more than the grade with the "run-up" in gold from 2009-present. And those pieces sold a lot quicker in the plastic than out of it, plus at a higher price.

Once. But I've probably submitted less than 10 coins.

None... so far... but not a volume submitter. Cheers, RickO
  • I have only had 1 coin come back Gen that I was clueless as to why, there has been a few otheres but I knew that they had no chance and only did it for conformity purpouses. I have had one other coin come back no-decision refund which I sent it with the next batch that came back VF35 which was the exspected grade to start with.

Out of ~25 coins submitted, one coin that body bagged at both services (a very nice large cent from a major EAC dealer), one DNC, a PCI MS63 '20S walker that I requested a min grade of MS61. I later sold that coin to a walker dealer specialist who concurred with MS61 and offered me a modest profit for it.
