Kennedy Inauguration Medal ???

I would like to know for sure what this is. I got this from a kid when I was in school in the 70's. I haven't been able to find anything that exactly matched it on the internet. I'm assuming it was made in 1961, is it bronze? It has what looks like a "D" mintmark on the obverse. Size is slightly larger than a half dollar but smaller than a silver dollar. Thanks in advance guys.

I never met a coin that wouldn't fit in my collection.....

Looks like the same medal in a home made slab.

  • This is the mint presidential medal for the whole term, not restricted to just the inauguration.
It was originally, I believe, a 3 inch medal. It was later reduced to the smaller size. Gilroy Roberts had his name in script on the base of the bust. It is barely readable on the small size one.

This bust was copied for the Kennedy half dollar. Mrs. Kennedy requested that the hair part be deemphasized and highlights added, which was done.

Here are photos of the official John F. Kennedy inaugural medals in bronze and silver. These were the first inaugural medals that were extensively marketed to the public. As a result, even the silver medal is fairly common. The silver piece is worth no more than melt. Paul Manship, who designed the 1933 Franklin Roosevelt inaugural medal, designed this piece.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

  • << <i>This medal design was the model for the John F. Kennedy half dollar. The mint had to get this piece out in record time so Gilroy Roberts and Frank Gaspero (sp) used the major elements for this medal design for the coin. >>

Sorry, but I think you need to go back and double check your info. The medal the OP posted pictures of is what Roberts and FG based the design of the Kennedy half dollar on, not the medal designed by Paul Manship.

Well, technically Gilroy Roberts didn’t use the medal for his design of the half dollars, he still had and used the plaster casts that he used to create the medal.
