George Kellogg Jr.'s Rare Dahlonega Half Eagle

GK Jr. owns this 1842-D Large Date half eagle. It is the second rarest Dahlonega half eagle, after the legendary 1861-D. We took it with us to the 2012 FUN Show and had Todd shoot it. My son graduates in May from the University of Alabama, home of the 2011 National Champions in football!

What'll you give me in Southern gold if I change my name to George Kellogg III?
PS- that has just enough of that "dirty gold" look to be ideal for a circulated coin.
Even if it weren't a rare coin I would still like it for its look, I think.
<< <i>I do like the look of old gold.... it seems there is no accurate count between large and small date coins (large being the rarity). Cheers, RickO >>
It is known that a second pair of half eagle dies (with Large Date, Large Letters) was shipped to the Dahlonega Mint on September 29, 1842. Although the date of receipt in Dahlonega is not known, I believe that the new dies were there in time for the October 14, 1842 coinage of half eagles. Using the October 14 date as a basis, the mintage of the 1842-D Small Date, Small Letters variety is 43,784 and that for the 1842-D Large Date, Large Letters variety is 15,824. Thus, the ratio of Small Date to Large Date is 2.77 to 1. As a second data point, the ratio of PCGS-certified Small Date to Large Date is a similar 2.46 to 1.
