How come I never get this lucky?

If I were to send this in AT or code 91 is what I would get back.

I suppose the original submitter would get the same result as you if he sent it to PCGS.
Now, do you think you would get the same positive result he got by sending it to NGC?

I don't care if it would bag or whatever, it's a dang pretty coin.

(Well, yeah, OK, I would care if I submitted it, but since I'm just a spectator, I like it regardless of the plastic.)

Just a few weeks ago I purchased this one off of eBay raw (for over $100.), felt pretty good about myself, sent it to our host under EXPRESS and got it back in a GEN holder...
    Hit and miss!

Wowee. Again, regardless of what the TPGs say or the AT/NT issue, I really love that Lincoln.

Has an eerie, ghostlike glow. Or maybe electrical. Yeah. It looks electrical and haunted, too. Way cool.

When do you think the coin in the OP was sent in? Recently?

rnc- izzat a strikethrough across the portrait of that IHC? Sure looks like it was struck through a hair-thin wire or somethin'!

Recent enough to be in a pronged holder.

  • There is a strange glossiness to the surfaces, especially the tips of the feathers. I'm no expert, and I can't vouch for the toning, but I like all three coins.

True...I hadn't been paying attention to how long they have had them but I guess it is less than 2 years, right?

Bagged or not, thems all some purty coins. I have an 06 IHC that is an electric purple color. Found it in a junk box once for a nickel at Robinson's Coins in Marietta, I think it was.

...or to put it another way, you can collect raw, slabbed or both. If you collect raw, anything goes. Collect what you like.

In the past, some collectors lacquered their coins to preserve them. Could this be the case? And isn't lacquer easily removed by acetone?

Posts like this crack me up. It's like every coin slabbed by other services would not be slabbed by our host- gimme a break. Ever look at some of the wildly toned ASE's that show up on Ebay in PCGS slabs?

  • This is why I refuse to collect any coin that is made up mostly of copper. Between re-coloring and acid treatment the coins are too ripe for doctoring or sometimes which is even worse is the suspicion of doctoring. Lack of faith would ruin my enjoyment of the hobby.

I spent a quarter on a run-of-the-mill, orange/brown-toned Lincoln. I wanted to see what swabbing with MS70 would do. I didn't expect the results to be so dramatic or i would have done "before" pix. There was no magenta, blue or purple before swabbing.

Very eye-opening. I smell a revived blue-toned copper debate. I personally have never been a fan of blue on copper. I know there are some NT blue MPLs because of the tissue paper in the original packaging but they are the exception and it's too hard for me to tell what's NT vs AT so I stay away. image

Any previously holdered coin can be reholdered in a pronged slab.

Interpretations such as yours crack me up. It's like you are so far off the mark as to what the purpose of my post was so as not to even warrant further comment.

What was your comment based upon, the stellar display of consistency of 25th Anniversary sets graded by PCGS?

QDB has stated that 95% of the Red IHCs he has seen were treated to get them that way and 90% of those are in slabs...either PC or ATS...so it all comes down to this month's version of market acceptable.

True, but I'm guessing the coin gets re-evaluated when it gets reholdered.

Sometimes you gotta buy the coin, & not the holder...

I think QDB was exaggerating for effect. I'd like to hear Rick's opinion on this.

Surely there are treated IHC's and early Lincolns. But I'm sure there are far more than 5% graded RD that are genuinely that way.
