What is your preferred type of lighting for evaluating or grading?

kruegerkrueger Posts: 904 ✭✭✭✭

I am using a 60W incadescent and also an ott light 13W fluorescent.

Does anyone now use the LED lights?

I like a larger point source, like an incandescent bulb. 75 watt or so. I think Flourescent hides too much, but that opinion was probably formed from shops where they have multiple flourescents for just such a reason.

Interestingly, unlike most people who use a high power lens, I prefer 3x to 5x. I feel that if I go too high in power, I'd still get the technical grade, but I'm missing the "artsy", eye appeal, portion of the grade that can swing it 1/2 point. Yeah...I step up the power if I'm looking for varieties, RPMs, etc.

A wooden torch made from a gnarly tree root, dipped in a tarry, creosote-like substance to help it burn and give off that nice black smoke.

They also come in handy for storming the castle, mobs, and hunting down the Frankenstein monster.

I prefer OTT lights when imaging coins.

For grading purpose's I've heard that 75PAR Halogen are best.

Any lamp will be fine if you know your camera.

I've been using an LED flashlight for evaluating coins. the point source light brings out hairlines and shows luster really well. The old Tensor lamps, if you can find one, also work nicely. Haven't tried a flaming pine knot as yet. Must be a Georgia piney woods thing. image

Sitting close to a window using Mother Nature's natural sunlight is great. If it's overcast or dark I prefer incandescent lighting.

I mostly use an incandescent light---60W. I understand that halogen light is best for evaluation of color on toned coins.

Incandescent for the most part. I do have an LED flashlight that I use if checking fine detail. Cheers, RickO

For grading, I prefer a small light, as seen from the coin's perspective, as it makes hairlines pop. A single LED at a few inches, a small desk lamp at a foot or two. I guess I usually have a swivel-arm lamp like the ones you see on the bourse about 2-3 feet from the coin when I'm viewing it.
  • Those that prefer incandescent bulbs, best to stock up because of the legislated phase out. 100 watt bulbs are no longer legal to manufacture, and the smaller bulbs are slated to go the same way.

Yep... I started stocking up. Getting harder to find too.
