Well, for one, the seller misidentified it as a Turban Head...of which it is not. I do not know gold so that's as far as I dare tread. But sometimes e-bay is like playing poker, you may claim two pair and lay down your hand and the dealer tells you you have a straight....so you win with what you show.

I doubt the seller bought the coin seeing as he dosent know what its correct name is. Maybe inherited it or "found" it.

1st bad sign is the category that the seller put the coin in:
Listed as $5, Half Eagle, 1811, Turban Head in category: Coins & Paper Money > Coins: US > Large Cents > Classic Head (1808-14)

2nd, and most important bad sign, is the "5" on the reverse. It is not even close to what a real 1811 small or tall 5 looks like. His "5" is completely mis-shappen and has no knob like all real 1811's have. The coin is a counterfeit

It appears to be the small 5, but kind of flat and mushy. The color and look of the coin is questionable. However, this doesn't explain why you're suspicious. It's just my observation of the item in pictures. I suppose the biggest suspicion is why a coin like this is not encapsulated by one of the third party grading companies like _ _ _, _ _ _, _ _ _ _ _ , _ _ _, or PCGS

His pictures are goofy.....

Two pics show the coin in a 2x2 flip.... the other two pics show the coin in a slab.....
obviously trying to show it's real by using different pics mixed in....

I just took a look at the coin in the 2x2. Either my eyes are going or the "5" on the reverse is completely different than the "5" on his close-up pic. Clearly they're both the same coin, but, why does the "5" appear correct on the 2x2 pic and not correct in the close-up pic?
I think the buyer may be at the "People's Court" that is being talked about in another thread.
Just another reason why you should only purchase $4000 coins on eBay that are certified.

Everything about it looks wrong, except maybe the color. Stars on obverse, lettering in reverse legend all way too crude for genuine.

The other set of pics are with coin in 2x2, pic taken through a loupe. No slab/plastic involved.

Can't tell for sure if the coin is not real based on those pics. Several features on the reverse suggest a fake (shape of 'R' in America, distance from 'U' in United to nearest leaf, etc.) but can't tell for sure.

Even if it is real, it seems to have other problems.

I could offer you a legitimate $100 smackeroo and probaby not get more than ten bucks for it.

You guys probably insist on slabbed coins when you get change at the convenience store, right

Couldn't tell anything from those photographs. It was just a hunch.

The fact that it was in a brand new 2x2 was merely circumstantial evidence.
