Can I submit coins in original govt' capsules?

kiyotekiyote Posts: 5,588 ✭✭✭✭✭
I'm guessing this isn't a problem because they must get massive amounts of coins in Gov't sealed boxes every year, I just don't want to mess up my first submission. I have a 2004 proof platinum $50 coin I want to submit but if I try and put it into a mylar flip I'm gonna drop it and it's gonna roll down the hallway into the heating vent.

They will crack it for you and many times send back the capsule as well.

My experience has been that coins that remain in original mint caps have a better shot at 70 because they have had few hands on them. You can request return of the capsule but it doesn't alwyas happen.

Yes you can! I sent in about 40 at one time, and only got 2 70's back image

Does PCGS support removal from non-gov't Air Tites on submission? I've always just used a flip but I'm considering sending in some more valuable coins which are currently not slabbed.

    Thanks!

Not a problem...actually a good way to do it. Cheers, RickO
  • For whatever reason they tend to destroy the capluses when they open. Out of 25 capsules from 25th Annivaersary set I submitted at least half came back damaged. I stopped submitting moderns in capsules as in my opinion it does not affect grades. Plus you will likely still want to open the capsule to examine the coin before submitting anyway....

I just put the capsule in one side of the flip the the ID tag in the other side. About 50% 70's for me going that route with non-spouse gold coins.

I submitted coins in Mint capsules and asked for the capsules be returned. I had no problems.

Removing from mint capsules before submission increases the chances of damaging the coin which will affect the grade.

although sometimes the capsules are cracked when they come back.

if you want to keep the original capsules safe, send it in an air-tite.

Sure you can. PCGS is very accomodating. I wish they'd fill out the paperwork for me image

They allow you to do this and will return the capsules, too, if it is specified on the invoice. However, at one time I believe they may have charged something like $1 per capsule to do this, though I may be wrong.

Do you guys save the original government packaging---boxes and COA's? If so, is the packaging isn't complete without the capsule and, if you go to sell the coin and the buyer wants the original packaging, will he be satisfied without the capsule?

Not if he plans on cracking it out and selling it as Mint original.

defeats the whole purpose of keeping your hands off an otherwise 70 coin. Also I believe you get charged to remove from a non-mint capsule.

I'd be very careful with 0.9999 gold and silver. The pure metals are VERY easily scratched, even in a new 2x2. I've submitted in capsules and had no problem. About 1/2 the time the capsule comes back.

PCGS has stated before that they are fine, and may even prefer, receiving in the OGP.
They may charge a nominal fee to reurn the capsule, or may just do it.

Submit in the capsule if you can. You can put the capsule in the flip if that makes you feel better image

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
